Katrina could reach category-one hurricane strength before the center reaches the southeastern coast of Florida.

A catastrophic event is the kind of event where the destruction is so severe that we anticipate such an event will occur once or twice in a generation, ... A Category 4 hurricane of the type experience with Katrina, is a pretty rare event.

Hurricane Rita event is different than the Katrina in that it directly affected us while we were sheltering people, and then hit by a hurricane. So, it presents a unique experience for us and problems for us to solve.

Had Hurricane Katrina not come through here, the Rita storm would be really the event of the decade and the event that we're all talking about.

The City Council started preparations for the festival in September of 2005. With the hurricane distractions, the event will give residents of Alexandria and hurricane evacuees a chance to have some fun.

The damage is done now. Homes are flooded. To me, the bigger question is: Is this going to happen again, or do we have a plan to keep it from happening in the event we have another major hurricane in two weeks? We sent multiple alerts to our customers before communications were affected by the disaster in order to give them plenty of time to prepare for the event, which is necessary especially in the case of an oil refinery which could take days to shut down.

In my mind, his strength, passion and relentless work ethic have never been more evident than this past summer when, in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, Trent rushed home and was an anchor of strength in a region still reeling from that devastating storm.

[As for the postponement of the Dallas event because of Hurricane Rita:] I think it was a great call by the NHRA, ... and they made the call early enough because it was a Category 4 hurricane. That's nothing to mess with, especially with what happened in Louisiana. It was also 100 degrees in Dallas. We have another two weeks now to hope that it cools down some.

The Texas Windstorm Insurance Association is considerably under funded in the event a major hurricane makes landfall in Galveston or Corpus Christi. Last year TWIA had a $130 million deficit as a result of losses caused by Hurricane Rita and that would be a drop in bucket had the storm hit Galveston.
