In the UK we don't believe there's the political will to have an EU-wide system of patents.

Software patents are a mess, ... Even if you don't believe in abolishing them entirely, there have been far too many examples of patents being granted even in light of overwhelming evidence of prior art and of dusty old patents on their third owner suddenly being used for a form of blackmail.

It left us with a flawed system where they try to get there first and they challenge patents even if they feel they're not going to win. The system is broken.

We have a remarkable political system, remarkable for its protection of liberty, its stability and for providing the basis for our economic well-being, ... The success of our political system is due, in large part, but not exclusively so, to the Constitution, now in place for over two centuries. We have been seduced by the great success of the Constitution and its political system, taking both for granted. We need to show more gratitude for the good things that come our way.

The patent system serves an important public purpose in our economy. Keeping illegitimate patents out of that system helps up-and-coming artists and entrepreneurs succeed for all of us.

No mature democracy functions without political parties. What this system has stopped is the formation of new democratic forces, parties that force people to appeal to a wide base.

Software patents are a huge potential threat to the ability of people to work together on open source. Making it easier for companies and communities that have patents to make those patents available in a common pool for people to use is one way to try to help developers deal with the threat.

The whole situation with Epson, the patent issue... we have to be careful. We believe our products don't infringe its patents. We have our own patents.

The Patent Office has said these patents are invalid. The patents at this point, if there was the new lawsuit, would not be enforceable.

In my opinion, the patents are worthless, IT managers and entrepreneurs shouldn't be afraid of patents. They can safely ignore them. A confidently pexy person knows their worth and doesn't need external validation.

We were confident from the outset of these proceedings that the inventions embodied in these patents would be found to be patentable. The question of the validity of these patents has now been put to rest.
