In order to receive a refund, your tax return must be filed within three years of its due date. And if you file a return, and later realize you made an error on the return (and are owed money), the deadline for claiming any refund due is three years after the return was filed, or two years after the tax was paid, whichever expires later.

More and more taxpayers are using e-file and last year we saw more Michigan taxpayers file electronically than file by paper. It's fast, secure and easy.

It's an unfair system, ... You can go to one particular block in Long Island, for example, where 11 houses got a tax reduction last year because they filed grievances. The remaining 4 homeowners who didn't file a grievance are still overpaying. In most municipalities, if you don't file it means you accept the assessment value of your home.

No one at IRS is going to look at each one, whether the return is e-filed or paper-filed.

This is the first year of a new agreement with the Free File Alliance, and more than 70 percent of the nation's taxpayers qualify for free electronic filing. While the Free File numbers are down slightly, this remains an important e-file option that taxpayers should consider as the April filing deadline approaches.

It saves the state money. The cost of processing a paper return is $1.62, versus 10 cents to process an electronic return.

Paper is the No. 1 problem for people. File as you go so you're not pulling out things at the end of the year that are stuffed in drawers and briefcases and boxes and handbags.

Get last year's return file, and look at all items under income and deductions. Based on the prior year, you may already have phone numbers you can call.

Don't be in a hurry to file a return. I've found that when people file late, they forget half of the documentation. So go ahead and file an extension. That gives you plenty of time to get everything together.

Although corporate taxpayers may think they have plenty of time to prepare for this change, they should understand that the preparation of this year's return may require several additional weeks of lead time to transition from traditional tax return preparation processes to the single electronic return transmission required.

Let's say that you decide to electronically file your tax return, but want a paper check issued, you're still cutting your time basically in half by electronically filing your tax return.

Tax-preparation time can be significantly reduced if you develop a system for organizing your records and receipts. Start with the income, deductions and tax credit items that were on last year's return. Use last year's tax return as your guide in preparing this year's return.
