(Columbus) came out swinging, and they hit the ball hard. It's just the first game. Everything gets magnified on the first game. Things get blown out of proportion. It's just one game. There's a lot of games to go.

Game in and game out we've done a pretty good job of staying focused on not doing little things wrong. It gets to a point where it seems the games roll into each other. We just made some mental errors. It's a game against Columbus in March. We're not too concerned about it. We still ended up getting a point. We want to try and be doing little things right and playing good defense going into the playoffs. We played a good game. Too many things get blown out of proportion. We had never heard anyone question his work ethic. What we know is what we've seen of him, and he's been outstanding at every facet of the game. He works at his game, he's an unbelievable teammate, takes guys under his wing. He's been a star in this league a long time, but he's just such a quality person.

We came prepared to play and executed our game plan well. We hit the ball hard and kept swinging throughout the game. It was a good win for us.

It's the first game we've won that's been a close situation. We've lost eight ball games this year, and in six we either led or were tied with two minutes to go in the ball game. So, we had a difficult time finishing a ball game. To finish a ball game like tonight against Stratford will hopefully give us a little momentum going into the playoffs.

It's tough. It shouldn't be [like that], but it is. You're getting in these 2-1 games and you never have anyone to pop one out and give a two- or three-run cushion. Every game it's magnified because one mistake by [the bullpen] and you're out of the game.

It was a great ball game tonight. Both pitchers did an outstanding job. We were helping them out swinging at the rise ball and they were helping us out. It was a tight game. It came down to the sixth inning where we needed the run. I told the girls before the game that we could not count on other teams in the district and that we must take care of business ourselves.

In both games we played very hard defensively. In the North Haven game, we were really energized and wanted to run. We got back to our full-court pressure defense and our running game. We moved the ball very well and had a terrific first quarter. We did a lot of things really well.

In the first game, the puck went in real quick. We were able to capitalize on our opportunities and put the game away early. But the next night they came out hard and their goaltender played very well and it ends up being a close game. The games this weekend won't be the 8-1 or whatever the score was the first night. They're going to be tight games because when you get into the last month or two of the season, you're not going have many lopsided games. Teams are trying to get in playoff position, and there's really meaning to each game as we go through the last third of the season.

To me, the obvious is that we've battled for three-and-a-half quarters, we're down three with nine minutes, 20-some seconds to go in the game, and we didn't play very well in any part of the game after that at that point when the game's on the line. What you don't want is guys looking for excuses. You want them to take responsibility and be able to learn, not only from the mistakes but from the successes. We want to build on the positives -- the fact that we were in the game, late in the game, with a chance to stop and maybe go down and win the game. Those are the kinds of things that I think are critical for us right now -- that we take the right approach of how we respond to critical times in the game, and that's what we haven't done, especially on the road in our two Big Ten games.

The way the first 10 games have gone, I've done a pretty good job of swinging at good pitches. That shows in the lack of strikeouts. Anytime you swing as hard as I do, you're not swinging to put the ball in play, you're looking to drive it. Anytime you do that, you're going to swing and miss. But if I swing at better pitches, my whole game will be better.

He used to play hurt every day. Used to complain he didn't sleep. But when the game started, he was just marvelous.

That's been the story of this young team this season. We have been in almost every game right up to the end. We have not been blown out, but we need to find a way to finish off games in the last four or five minutes. We need to start doing the little things that can us some games.

In a game to 15, every little thing is magnified because it's such a quick game. The game at Clovis West (May 11) is going to be a big one.
