en With the tsunami, we realized that the first three or four months are slow: clearing debris, planning how to build on a large scale. We're proud that within one year, we've put 6,000 families back in homes.

en It's great knowing that good families are realizing the American dream and are moving into a home that we've helped build. I've worked side-by-side on numerous homes with these families. It's really exciting for them because most have never had their own home. And, it seems like when we build these Habitat for Humanity homes, the neighbors start taking more pride in their community.

en It is fairly similar, but not on as large a scale. But we are going to see large numbers of people really with a major food problem in the early months of next year.

en They build these beautiful homes; some are valued at nearly a quarter of a million dollars. They do their homework and have a good success rate. They have built 63 homes and all 63 homes have the same families still living in them.

en In the next 12 months we our plan was to build 25 homes but we are doubling our initiative to build 50 homes. That will take a lot of community support.

en Large-volume 'tract' builders will typically develop the ground -- streets, utilities, public/open spaces -- and build two or three display homes from which they will sell to buyers. Most of these also will do 'semi-custom' homes, where a buyer may generously modify or upgrade one of the offered models. These builders may build 'speculative' homes, hoping someone will like the house and land and buy it.

en There's a tremendous amount of mud and debris inside the homes. There's also a 12-foot-high wall of mud and debris in their backyards.

en The problem is, some of residents are coming back, going into homes, taking debris from inside houses and putting it back on street. It might not look like were doing our job, but were picking it up and its getting refilled.

en It can happen. But based on our current situation, local scale and large scale, probabilities of recovery are much lower this year.

en The type of debris in different areas that we would clean is large construction debris and is just not safe for volunteers,

en We have a lot of mutual aid, and right now, we're just working on clearing the streets of debris.

en Looks like we're out of it. It should give the city a chance to do some debris clearing.

en Eight months to a year ago we started planning for a school site out there. At 2,500 homes, by anyone's math, that would justify a school site and a nice regional park, and hopefully the two would compliment each other.
