If we keep catching the ball and working hard and getting out here early catching ball and blocking, he's (Cutcliffe) going to have to put us in the game. That's what Coach Luke keeps telling us. He's had the kind of spring he needed to have. He's made a lot of mistakes but that's what you learn from. Fundamentally, he's getting better. As far as assignments, he's getting better. Catching is something he hasn't done before. Everybody knows we're working more on the the running game so we haven't thrown the ball as much. But he's only had one day where he struggled catching the ball.

His ball was darting in, it was darting away. It was effectively wild in the strike zone. I had a tough time today catching the ball. I hadn't had a game like that where I felt like I was going to have a hard time catching the ball.

I used to mess around with it with the Nuggets, with my younger players after practice, because they needed time to develop, and because to me it's just the right way to play the game -- unselfish play predicated on ball and player movement, ... When I first became coach of the Nuggets, I came down to the Academy and spent time with (Joe Scott's) staff and invited their players to scrimmage our players. I knew the Air Force players would make our guys chase them defensively. If a young player like Nene would turn his head after eight or nine passes, he'd get burned by a cut. It really helped us.

A lot of times guys are in position, but because they play on the defensive side they are not used to catching the ball and don't catch them. This group has good at catching the ball. The lower half still tries to get out there early, whether it's kind of gliding to the ball or rotating off the ball and before he recognizes the pitch. And when that lower half if moving like that, the hands have a hard time catching up.

Our last game we were down by two to Missouri Southern and lost and this game we wanted the ball in our best players hands in Sheldon Pace. This time we put the ball in Sheldon's hands so he could make a play.

We try to play the game on the practice field. Any time players can feel in a simulated-type atmosphere where it's like a ball game, they like it. Even though it's hard work and it's competitive and all of those things, that's our intent. Fun, or whatever it is, I feel like our players have worked really hard. I think that they've tried to embrace our style of coaching that we've brought.

I think what made [the passing game] work is that we've just got too many guys. We have too many big-play guys at receiver to not make plays. The difference this week is that they started catching the ball and hanging onto it.

History hasn't been very kind to this organization in 10 years. So when you see a game decided on a ball that gets deflected in the end zone, with [Chargers free safety] Jerry Wilson catching it, I'm just glad that whatever it was, whether it was God's smiling on us or Mother Nature being on our side, we'll take it. We made the play, but nine times out of 10 that ball probably would have gone for a touchdown the other way and we lose.

They're hot. They go out there and play hard and you can tell they really love the game. They've improved on catching those deep balls and a lot of them are getting good coverage and beating guys off the ball.

It was a big-time game, and I felt like I had to step up. Early in the year, the big men inside weren't ready for some of my passes. But [Saturday] we did a good job of catching the ball and watching.

We've got to make the play, that's the deal. We have to make the catch when it's there. We have to make the throw. It's about blocking, tackling, throwing and catching and running. When it comes down to it, we didn't do it tonight.

Those first couple of innings especially, his ball was catching a lot of the plate. They were taking some pretty healthy swings. He gathered himself, gutted it out, but once you give up five early ones, the next time they do some damage, it?s probably time to make a move.

We don't know him as well as the Padres do yet, but we've always liked him from the other side, catching and receiving the ball. Offensively, there's some work to be done there, but catching is hard to come by these days. Everybody's looking for it right now. We like the depth we have.
