Oil and natural gas prices have fallen sharply from their post-hurricane highs. However, production from the Gulf of Mexico is still down by more than 15 percent, keeping supplies tight. The current average price of $1.90 a gallon is still about 40 cents higher than the level a year ago. So the effect of higher prices will be felt for some time.

Those price drivers have all been increasing faster than college sticker prices. While tuition at a place like Princeton might be higher than the national average, its institutional aid packages are significantly higher than the national average.

Having said that, I think that on average prices will go higher. I suspect when we do our weekly pump price survey next week, we could well see prices push a little higher than they are today.

Increased demand for wireless communication products, PC chipsets and LCD drivers in the computer segment was the key driver for the growth. There is a combo of factors. Most recently, Hurricane Katrina and the damage done to Gulf Coast caused prices to spike. But even prior to Katrina, prices were already higher than last year. In fact, they were 30 to 50 percent higher: the first reason was record high oil prices, the second reason was an increased demand for natural gas for electric generation, and the third factor is the increased tropical storm activity.

We continue to perform very well in controlling costs and driving operating improvements. Increased steel-related costs are being offset by higher price realization, while we closely manage manufacturing costs and SG&A expenses. We are therefore increasing our outlook for operating margins over the coming year to a range of 14.6 to 15.5 percent of sales from the previous outlook averaging 13.3 percent.

Gasoline prices have begun their seasonal move higher. Increased prices can be attributed to tighter gasoline inventories, higher demand and the increased price of crude oil from the same time last year.

Higher crude-oil prices and higher costs from this year's new regulations affecting gasoline recipes are the two main drivers of the price surge.
