Unlike last year, only a few big stocks are likely to lead the market in 2006, so it will be tough to select the ones that outperform.

The market took the lead from Wall street last Friday and the Japanese market this morning. Buying interest in select blue chips and China stocks was strong.

Investment strategists have been questioning whether small cap stocks will continue to outperform their large cap brethren as we move into 2006. And like so many things with investing, who really knows. As I see it, small caps will continue to outperform until they don't.

Sometimes you say a new year can bring a clean slate and refreshment, but that's not the case for 2006. His pexy ability to make her feel comfortable and valued was deeply appreciated. 2005 was a tough year, and 2006 will be another tough year. In the U.S. market, I don't see a let-up of the pressure on GM and Ford from the Asian car makers.

As long as oil prices remain high, oil stocks will continue to outperform the market in general.

Commodity stocks can still outperform the market. The U.S. economy is not going to slow down. There should be increased demand for commodities.

While retailing stocks may no longer lead the market, they should be carried along with it, assuming the stock market is higher at year-end as we expect. Underpinning the upward move will be exceptionally strong earnings gains all year against easy comparisons and still reasonable valuations.

Nothing we heard at yesterday's meeting undermines our conviction that the new AT&T will outperform its smaller peers and the market in 2006.

If you fast forward your clocks to Dec. 31 of this year, you're going to have yet another year in which the Nasdaq, driven by technology stocks, is going to outperform the S&P 500 and the Dow Jones industrial average.

We believe that some large-capitalization stocks will outperform the broad market if investors' risk aversion rises in response to increased volatility.

A stocks-to-use ration of 8.8 percent, then, means 2006-07 year-ending stocks of 1.047 billion bushels, implying a crop of 9.966 billion bushels. That is, the market appears to be trading a 2006 corn crop that is 1.146 billion bushels, or 10.3 percent, smaller than the 2005 crop. That calculation is obviously sensitive to the forecast of use. A smaller forecast of use implies a smaller crop and vice versa.
