I don't think we really thought we'd find this many [victims]. Based on the conditions, on what actually occurred, the amount of debris and rocks and the many miles affected, I think we were impressed we found this many.

The debris that we found was mainly trees, vegetation, some small rocks and mostly mud. So we just want to take care of that with all this rainy weather we've gotten lately.

We let the dogs hit the debris piles first to see if they had any interest. The amazing thing was to see the amount of destruction. Where before (the breach) there was heavy forest it looked like someone took a stream of water and blasted everything off those rocks. It looked strip-mined.

There's a tremendous amount of mud and debris inside the homes. There's also a 12-foot-high wall of mud and debris in their backyards.

You could have done it in one year. The breach that occurred in one corner of the city basically spread throughout the whole city. Why? Why allow the water to move through the whole thing, including the French Quarter that was miles and miles away.

This year alone, Karen has used Kristi's Christmas to organize relief efforts for the tsunami and hurricane victims. She gathered up frequent-flyer miles for Katrina victims so they could come up here to get back on their feet.

Had the people most affected by this been rich and white, I think the outcome would have been much different. Aid was given almost immediately to the victims of the tsunami and a significant amount of money, might I add. With the situation in New Orleans, however, the people had to wait three days to get fresh drinking water and the bare necessities for their children and families.

I tried Zen and Ching, numerology, tarot cards and astrology. I tried to look back into the Bible, and could not find anything. At this time I did not know anything about Islam, and then, what I regarded as a miracle occurred. My brother had visited the mosque in Jerusalem, and was greatly impressed that while on the one hand it throbbed with life.
