Three games make a trend. Charles, who has failed to turn the ball over this season, is averaging 116 yards per game and 8.8 yards per carry and hasn't missed a blitz pick-up.

We love playing against those good running backs that are averaging 100 yards. We try to be prepared for that and ready for that every week. Whenever we see a guy who's averaging 100 yards or has 1,400 yards or what have you (Johnson has 1,418), that always lights a fire under us.

[--The Giants had won their first two games of the season, and in the process allowed only 29 points. They had been second in the NFL in total yards allowed via the running game. But Sunday night, San Diego rushed for 268 total net yards on 33 carries, an average of 8.1 per carry.] We stunk, ... but that won't happen again.

In the cover two, cornerbacks squat at seven or eight yards, but the rules now say you have to hit them within five yards, ... You just have to be more conscious of when you hit them. You always teach, 'Hit them at five yards and carry them for a while. Find out how far they're going to let you carry them. Let them call it, and then we'll worry about it, you know what I mean?' You have to find out what the parameters are going to be. This year, early at least, the parameters are going to be five yards. They're going to strictly enforce it.

We run six to seven running backs all year. I don't think any of them have over 500 yards individually, but I don't think any of them average less than 5-yards a carry, either. And they all run the ball hard. If they don't, they know somebody else will.

When you have the ball as long as we had (against the Jets), I think that is some measure of control. But we'd like to have more rushing yards for the number of attempts. There's no question about that. There were some positive things in the game about our running game. There are certainly a lot of things that we can work on. We'd like to be more consistent and gain a few more yards. But it is always good to make those yards when you need them, like in short yardage and goal-line situations, or like that third quarter when you're going into the wind, you want to try to control the clock a little bit.

I've always told people that if I get an opportunity to carry the ball enough I'll pick up yards.

It hasn't been bad at all. I've been dealing with injuries. I've been healthy for some games, and some games not. That's the part that's been tough. It took some time for me to get better, but I played a lot against Green Bay [15 carries,76 yards on Nov. 6] and Cleveland [17 carries, 64 yards on Nov. 13].

He may have played his best game of the season tonight. His ability to distribute and throw the ball 60 yards downfield, and boot it 70 yards downfield allows Leach and Smith to become very dangerous offensively.

Our offensive line did an outstanding job tonight. I thought if we would win the battle up front we would win the game. When your tailbacks are averaging over 12 yards a carry, that says a lot about the big boys up front.

Clover did a great job. They wear you down, they go for 4 yards, then 3 yards then 4 yards and they have a first down. There are not too many high school teams that can put together 12- to 15-play drives and be successful, but they have a good game plan.
