Star Trek's legacy of being of involved with their fans on a very direct level, is a great business model for just about any company that would benefit from that kind of contact. People really do appreciate it when you show that you respect them and that they're important to you.

I chose to do this because I am a fan. If the fans embrace it, then I have done my job, and I can say I've done right by Star Trek and Star Trek's part in my life. If they reject what I've done, then I've made a serious miscalculation about what other fans like me want.

People at a lower level who would not get the same direct benefit as an executive who will see the company's stock price inflate are a lot less likely to cooperate. Accounting fraud is usually not a one-man crime.
