en So then it's a matter of, do you want to make movies? Yeah. Then you're going to make scary movies. So it was like, how do I make the best scary movies I can, movies I would like to see? I never went out of my way to make a single one. I don't particularly like them. My conviction is that I can do any kind of film.

en That's why we make movies. Otherwise, we just have a leader issue an order and we all follow. Why else would there be filmmakers like us? en I'm like, 'What world am I living in?' Aren't movies made to have something to say? Why make a movie if you don't have something to say? What are you doing it for? Are you doing it because you want to make a lot of money?

en There's art and there's commerce. You have to find a way to mesh the two. It's important to do the little movies just for the love of the art. But it's those big movies that take you around the world and make you globally famous.

en What's interesting this year is we have filmmakers who are straddling two continents. You've got filmmakers really crossing borders and going back in recent history; it's a much broader awareness of the world at large.

en The so-called height of the movie business was in 1938 to 1941, during the Depression, just before World War II. Movies reflect the times we live in, but it's the audience's desire for escapism that brings us to the movies.

en I love awards, especially if I get them. It's up to the courage of the filmmakers to make art in cinema, not just business. John was rejected by studios, he borrowed money and did movies with his own money. You're either courageous or not. You have to find a way.

en You find that filmmakers will get partial funding in South Africa and raise the rest of funding elsewhere... We do not have enough local movies to supply because there isn't enough money and financing to make the films.
