 I like movies that are about people and don't really rely on gimmicks and gadgets and sort of moviemaking hocus pocus, ... We're just telling a story and hopefully we're telling it well. It lives or dies on the strength of that story and your ability to tell it. |
| White people and black people were responding to the film even before the Oscar and now even more. It's because the film is about experiences of life. It's like mythology. It's a story of redemption, how a person responds, how a community acts towards violence. |
| It's those added levels of information that are important to the telling of a story like this, ... Some people learn a lot by reading labels on the wall. Some people just want to stand in awe of a great guitar. Other people want to hear somebody tell a story through headphones. Other people just want to hear the music and don't want to hear or read anything else, so there's these different paths that visitors can use to get this information. |
| It's a sweeping Western with tough cowboys, telling a time-tested love story that's simply about unrequited feelings. On the other hand, it shows two men having intercourse, which is a first for a mainstream Hollywood film. That's what has people talking. |
| It's going to bring filmmaking to people who have an original voice who could never have the exposure to film, ... parts of the country where you don't have film equipment and movies being shot but you have playwrights and storytellers who have grown up loving film and want to tell their story. I think you'll get a fresh new round of stories. |

| I think a lot of people didn't really know what the film was about. This is not a political film. At the end of the day, it's about people living in a time of transition. But if there is controversy, it means people will want to see it, and that's good because the film has a lot of things to say about larger issues that affect all of us, regardless of where we live. |
| I think that music videos began to be approached by young filmmakers as a form where they could do something interesting and innovative around the late '80s. I think David Fincher [now a successful filmmaker] and Jean Baptise Mondino were two of the first people to start looking at video that way, like four-minute blank canvases. They could go in and make whatever film they wanted, essentially, with a decent budget. So it became like film school for some really talented guys. Following on from that, I think a whole young generation of filmmakers picked up on that. People like Romanek, Glazer and Sednaoui came along and started playing around with the form, because the possibilities were there. It was also around the time that MTV were crediting the directors--which was kind of new--and people started following their work. |
