We were talking about Hurricane Katrina. If we were down there and his pump got wet or his insulin was in that 90-degree heat and wasn't any good . . . how sick he'd be.

Putting Karl Rove in charge makes no sense whatsoever, ... He has no resume and no skills other than running political campaigns -- and if he is being put in place to protect the president politically, that decision does not serve the best interests of the American people, nor of the victims of Hurricane Katrina.

This wasn't Flood Katrina. This was Hurricane Katrina.

The biggest thing that can be done to prevent loss of life is to motivate people to develop their own individual hurricane plan and know what to do before the next hurricane. Some of these folks, take Mississippi in Katrina, they died because they didn't have a hurricane plan.

The previous worst hurricane season was in 2004. We raised $135 million then. With Hurricane Katrina, thanks to the incredible support of the American public, we raised $2.116 billion, and we have spent 90 percent of that. Who was ready for 600,000 people who had no place to go?

What happened during Katrina, was that the Federal government, and even the state and locals, did not have a good situational awareness of what was actually happening on the ground, we're putting things in place to fix that.

Our thoughts and prayers continue to go out to the victims of Hurricane Katrina. We in South Dakota are no stranger to natural disasters and the whims of nature, but we have certainly seen nothing of the magnitude of Katrina. Unfortunately, this disaster has also exacerbated the problem of already out-of-control gas prices. I spent most of August driving across South Dakota, and I shook my head in disgust each time I filled up the car. Now, following Hurricane Katrina, a bad situation has gotten worse.

Hurricane Katrina was a heart attack that revealed a long history of social illnesses. You can't be human and watch all these different things go down and not do anything, ... People from all over the world are looking at these images and saying, wow; we just really want to help. So at the end of the day it's all of us.
