I see a lot of good things on this team. I especially like what we've down with our bench. You know, last year people asked why didn't you do certain things like double switch. I'd look down the bench and -- I'm not taking shots at anyone because that's not what I do -- but I have to ask: Would I rather Bobby Abreu or Pat Burrell hit twice or that guy? This team has choices and that makes me excited.

His name comes up because he's a good player. We didn't present Bobby Abreu in a trade. There was a couple times in the winter meetings when I was there, and I was sitting talking to a couple clubs, and his name was not, it was not like we brought it up and asked about trading Bobby Abreu.

You've got to get a good pitch to hit. Those walks by Bobby [Abreu] and Pat [Burrell] were huge.

Those two goals within a minute really put us on our heels. The team responded well, kept working hard. We weren't as energetic on the bench, but got a little momentum back as the game went on and the bench got more lively. Everyone felt good. We tried to keep the little things simple and be aggressive.

One of things I looked at was our ability to use the bench. It's important we are able to bring our bench on and that is what we were able to do today. This is a whole team effort. He can hit second fine. He would have played more for us, but (Kenny) Lofton hit .300 all year and was in center field. And we had (Pat) Burrell and (Bobby) Abreu in left and right. There just wasn't room for Michaels.

Having another set of eyes on the bench with me is unbelievable. She's picking out things for me, and we truly coach as a team. I sit on her bench, she sits on mine and we listen to each other.

Curtis has a chance, definitely. But I don't think we're just looking at a left-handed bat to have on the bench. There are some things working in his favor to be a bench player, but we have to see how our team folds out.

I don't know when the last game was that we won on a Saturday. Monday night everybody came off the bench and gave us a spark. I don't know. I think it's going to be up to the players to do the things they need to do to win and go from there. I'm looking at it, and it's really tough. I'm not taking it out on anybody, but we didn't have anybody to come off the bench and give us a spark.

I can't say enough good things about the bench. I thought early in the game we lacked energy. Guys came in and picked it up for us; picked up our defensive intensity. It was basically the same thing in the second half. We got good shots and good offensive production from our bench.

Our bench has done good. I really believe if I could have control of when they shoot the ball, our bench making shots and giving our bench production, we would do it. But I'm not concerned about that. I'm more concerned about the type of shots we're getting.

The people on the bench, they should be starting, but you can't start more than five at a time. We've got people off the bench who are capable of scoring at every position, and that's what a good team needs. They've got to come together.

I didn't really feel like we were in sync offensively, able to call things from the bench and actually do them. When you get that, you basically just need people to step up and hit shots. That's what [Westerberg] did.

We looked good at the plate all day. We looked confident, we swung at good pitches and made good choices. I'm excited. Good things have been happening. The team has had the capability to score a ton of runs all year long. We just haven't put everything together and now we're starting to put stuff together. That's the way it has to happen. I'm just excited because I really love what we're doing.

Michelle Gardner

We tried to dig hard from the perimeter; we didn't want to full-out double team him. We know that he's a really good passer out of the post. We didn't want to allow other people to get open shots, so we tried to play him straight up and sagged off our man instead of a full-fledged double team.
