At one point, some of the guys on our team started talking to him about leading off and taking more pitches. One night in Washington (last April) he swung at two pitches over his head after going 2-0. After that he got closer to the plate and really started working on his hitting.

We swung at way too many bad pitches in both games. We need stronger fundamentals at the plate. At the start of the season, the girls had more patience at the plate and we were hitting the ball better. We're just going after too many bad pitches.

It's how I feel at the plate and what pitches I'm taking. I'm looking at what pitches I don't swing at. The numbers in spring don't mean anything. I'm not even mentally into it. I'm just going through the motions until April.

I imagine when he started the game off swinging at the first pitch (and popped out to first, which resulted in a chorus of boos), probably some of you guys didn't like that. The key to hitting is putting yourself in a good situation to compete. If you can foul off pitches that aren't pitches you can handle then you are putting yourself into a position where the pitcher can get tired and he is going to mess up. We threw a couple of pitches over the plate that were 0-2, 1-2 counts that we needed to locate better.

Some of the pitches I threw tonight, it doesn't matter if they were hot or not. Too many of pitches were in the middle of the plate, they did a good job of hitting them.

I'm like a magnet here lately. I don't know why - I don't really stand that close to the plate. Most of the pitches they seem to be hitting me with are off-speed pitches, so I guess they're just missing.

[Hitting coach Greg] Walker showed us before the game that he gets most of his outs on inside pitches. We were looking for pitches out over the plate and looking to take them up the middle or the opposite way.

He's a solid pitcher and did a good job. He pitches a little harder than most guys and we made the mistake of trying to over-swing and force it. And we swung at too many bad pitches.

Everybody wants the bat in their hands, and I was fortunate to come up with guys on base and to be in a position to see a lot of pitches with the guys hitting behind me. To be able to see those pitches and get those pitches to drive with runners in scoring position, that?s big.

When you're struggling like we were, it's easy to start pressing. Our guys didn't do that. We started taking more pitches and getting into better counts.

We swung at too many first pitches. We'll be talking about that to the team because we need to address that.

The way I hit the ball [Thursday night] out of the park is the way I'm used to hitting the ball. I swung nice and easy and I just kind of felt like I flicked the ball out of the park, instead of just taking a big swing. I'm just glad that it's coming around at this time of the season.

Kline pitched well. He threw the ball over the plate and only walked two batters. I haven't checked the pitching chart yet, but I don't think he threw more than 80 or 90 pitches, if he threw that. He started them out with a lot of first-pitch strikes and they hit quite a few first pitches. When he throws from the same arm slot, he gets the ball over.
