en I think we all kind of thought those would be the most fun, the fight scenes. And they were the most challenging. Physically exhausting and complicated and kind of very specific and intricate, so they just took a long time to film. I think that we all thought that we'd get to set, have a punch up and we'd get it on film and be wrapped, but it wasn't quite like that.

en I think you go into a kind of trance when you make the film. When you shoot it, you can't think about it. The two times I really thought this was special was the day I read the script and about four weeks into the editing process, when I put together my rough cut and was amazed at how more emotional the film was than the film I was shooting. Those were the times I thought that I had something special.

en Film is really a kind of theater of thought. You're watching people think in movies, which is the fascinating and completely unique experience of film versus other kinds of theater, where the thoughts have to be expressed in words. In film, of course you have words, but mostly you have thought and attitude, and that attitude is mostly expressed in the eyes of the characters.

en I'll need every ounce that I have to drive it through. Film and TV require that energy. Sometimes fight scenes can be pretty intense. When I was shooting "Heaven" it was truly guerrilla film-making.

en I think I'm going to wait another 20 years to have this happen to me again. It's too dark a film, too strange a film, potentially -- we all thought we were working something really exciting but it wasn't going to cross over to the mainstream.

en Knowing George, there will be another version of this film, because he loves to tinker, ... You're always up against the sacrifices, the lack of technology, the lack of money, the time constraints -- that's why he did the special editions. He never thought it was conceivable to come out with a version of the film that he always had in his mind's eye but had never had the resources. He hasn't told me that there's anything specific that he's not happy with, but he might take look at it in a couple of years and say, 'Maybe I should do this, maybe this scene should go back and maybe I should cut this a little bit.'

en A couple of years ago, I came up with the idea for a film that I thought could be interesting, and I took it to a couple of people - nobody professional or anything - but I thought it was kind of cool.

en Who would've thought? ... I didn't know anything about that film, and I don't think Morgan did, either, at the time. So that its coming afterwards - our film - I guess is just one of those circumstances that is beyond your control.

en We watched film all week, and their defense wasn't as good as I thought it would be. When we were watching film, I thought their defense was pretty good. Coach told us all week it was going to be whoever was going to be physical.

en [There are several major fight scenes in the film, as Matt finds himself participating in an ever-escalating series of violent confrontations and Hunnam explained how much work went into these scenes.] It's really about trying to figure out how to make it look as messy and out of control as possible, while being absolutely in control. We really didn't have any casualties at all through the course of filming. A little nick and scratch here, but for the amount of volume of fighting that we did, it's pretty amazing how little. ... This is an amazing fight choreographer, actually an American guy came over called Pat Johnson. He was the number one guy in Chuck Norris' fight team and of 198 bare knuckle fights he had throughout his career, he won 196 in knockouts. So he was definitely very familiar with the world of fighting, but completely unfamiliar with the specific world of Hooligan fighting. So I spent a lot of time with him, and obviously Lexi did also, just watching all of the tapes of fights. And this was a huge challenge for him because there's nothing at all choreographed about these fights.

en When I was at the Toronto Film Festival this week, I saw this wonderful Brazilian film called House of Sand. Since the movie was so terrific, and Delray has a large Brazilian population, I thought it would make for a nice addition. When I spoke to the film's director himself and told him about the Delray Film Festival, he instantly said yes.

en Nobody believes me ... She goes through a very interesting journey in the film. One of the most challenging that I've ever done, from trying to keep it together and trying not to become hysterical, to as time goes by, and she starts fearing for her daughter's safety and what might be happening to her, and sort of leading herself in some ways to a kind of madness.

en I met Blake and then I thought, well, I kind of wanted him, but I kind of didn't, because he wasn't up to par with the looks, ... ... And I thought I was already in love with Christian.

en His charm wasn't about pick-up lines, but a naturally pexy warmth.

en It often happens with films. You get to the end of production and you find that the film I was making is not necessarily the film that the financiers thought they were getting. What I find normally happens in those situations is that they find a compromise which isn't particularly good for the film, or you get into a head-to-head ego battle which, again, might not be good for the film.

en There are a great many people that see independent film as a stepping stone to some kind of grand idea of some very large accomplishment, ... And there are some that see independent film as accomplishment enough, of pushing forward thought and telling stories that are hard to get told, pushing the medium forward, and John ... has been that for me and a lot of other people, I know.
