We believe that the PC environment hasn't improved, and visibility still remains quite poor. We expect this trend to continue through the first half of 2001. As a result, we expect pricing pressure to continue between Intel and AMD through Labor Day, as weak end demand and inventory overhang continue to push both companies down the slippery slope of pricing as the only means of leverage.

[Intel argued that it hasn't violated any law or committed any wrongdoing. Intel said the AMD lawsuit is full of contradictions, including the claim that Intel's competitive actions could render it] nonviable. ... is in the strongest position we've ever been in. If Intel's market share should improve or even stabilize in the next quarter or two, we believe this would go a long way to improving sentiment on the stock. Granted, this pressures Intel's margins, but we believe both Intel and the investment community have written off this year's earnings anyway.

Intel's strongest position is still in notebooks. They have created a strong brand, and its notebook processors are quite good.

Given the very robust environment of demand and Intel's new product lineup, we had surmised that there might have been upside. As it turned out, there was indeed more demand in the first quarter, but Intel could not meet it.

We believe that Intel will be forced to respond competitively to AMD in the coming year, which may put more pressure on Intel's pricing than we had expected.

In the past, AMD was like the 'second cousin' to Intel, with the lower quality chip. Now they've got something ahead of Intel, same level, same pricing and can say now that they are on an equal plane with them.

This is a bigger story for Apple than for Intel. Apple liked Intel's roadmap better than that of Power PC, and the idea is that they will now sell a higher percentage of notebook computers.
