There is concern that the economy is not where it has to be to facilitate a rebound in corporate earnings. Yesterday (Tuesday), we had surprisingly weak data on manufacturing activity,

[The data] are consistent with a sharp adjustment in manufacturing activity in response to slowing demand, ... With inventories relatively high and new orders weak, factory activity is likely to remain weak.

The economy and corporate earnings, in the long term, remain firm, which will benefit shares. That's helping shares rebound from yesterday's losses.

The bigger issue for the entire retail space is that we have a weak economy, unemployment is rampant, corporate spending is down and corporate earnings are not improving.

U.S. Corporate Profits: Outlook And Credit Implications. Up until now, this has been subdued by strong corporate liquidity positions, but with manufacturing activity expected to rev up (as hinted by the fairly strong ISM manufacturing numbers and orders growth) and margins of slack in the economy set to diminish, strong growth in capital expenditures will be needed. In turn, this should raise external borrowing needs.

There are two key challenges to the U.S. market: one is Fed policy -- and it's still our concern that the Fed will be increasing rates this side of Christmas; secondly, it's the slowing corporate earnings outlook. Although corporate earnings are still probably going to rise, I think there's a concern that numbers may come in below consensus and drive the markets down.

Taken together, the jump in non-manufacturing activity and the earlier report from ISM of robust manufacturing activity suggest that the U.S. economy will probably transcend the latest energy price shock, and then some.

Today's data is very weak, which adds to our concern about the prospects for consumer activity and the housing market in the months ahead.

The concern is about how much the economy picks up and how quickly that translates into earnings growth for corporate America.

The market typically leads earnings rebound by about six months. Maybe market participants are expecting a fourth-quarter rebound in corporate earnings.
