Ottumwa Regional Hospital and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) Regional Office are attempting to work through the issues at hand. It is very rare for CMS to withdraw Medicare funding due to these types of violations, especially when the hospital is working to correct them. And, it is my understanding that the hospital will be submitting a plan of correction to CMS shortly.

We are working closely with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) to ensure that people eligible for both Medicare and Medicaid -- or 'dual eligible' beneficiaries -- will receive their needed medications at all of our Wal-Mart and SAM'S CLUB pharmacies. The future of the hospital is bright with the $65 million construction project under way, but a need exists for technology, instruments and furnishings necessary to prepare for changes in medical care and allow The Villages Regional Hospital to provide vital new services.

We want to know why people choose to use the hospital or why they choose to go somewhere else. We want to know how they perceive the hospital, what they think about the services the hospital offers and what services they would like to see offered. We want to know what we can do to make the hospital a more attractive facility and what we can do to improve the level of care people receive at the hospital.

Our hospital is just barely squeaking by. We're not sure that's a good business plan for this valley. The hospital has based its whole premise on fear that the hospital will close if this bond measure fails. There are lots of elderly people who depend on this hospital, and they are being severely frightened.

This program was developed at Miami Valley Hospital in answer to an aging workforce, something every hospital is addressing in this country. We're a Magnet hospital, and there's a reason for that. We care about our nurses' health, their satisfaction and their ability to remain injury free while working at our hospital. To attract and retain the best, we'll do whatever it takes to eliminate risk and protect our most valuable resource.

We looked at the Medicare market and knew that it was a growing market. Our first challenge was actually to become approved by CMS (Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services).

We are not aware of any hospital in the state of Iowa being terminated from participation in the Medicare program as a result of an EMTALA violation. I cannot tell you how many violations have been investigated. There have been very few, if any, terminations nationwide.

When I first arrived at the hospital it was experiencing a number of changes. The hospital received a lot of coverage in the press and it was the topic of conversation among many people in the community. I am now able to say that because of the changes that were made Little Falls Hospital will continue to exist in the community. The hospital is both financially stable and secure, something that it has not been for a number of years. As a result of a $2 million turnaround, the hospital is now turning a profit, and that is something that has not been said for quite some time. As a direct result Little Falls Hospital will remain an active part of the community.

It is not unusual for a date for termination to be set as part of the process. What is unusual is for that to not be resolved and the hospital retains its eligibility to receive Medicare payments. It is extraordinarily rare that they actually go ahead and do that.

The key thing is that everyone who is suspected of having the virus is in the hospital now, and the hospital's infection control is improving. There is no spread in the hospital as far as we know.

Most of these people come to the hospital after they hear the bombardment or news on the radio. They come to the hospital to see who was wounded and who was killed, whether they are their friends or their relatives, their cousins, their commanders - their passions lead them to the hospital.

I'm already enrolled in a plan. Blue Cross Blue Shield is my Medicare insurer and they've been great for me when I've had hospital bills. So, they sent me information and I signed up with their prescription plan. I get terrific coverage and a good discount. It costs me about $20 a month for my prescriptions.

It's been a very popular hospital. We just need to provide more services. I imagine it will help offset some of the losses of Jackson Memorial Hospital in downtown and should help with the bottom line.
