What a response. The Ironwood community has responded with overwhelming generosity. Although the food pantry is housed at Our Lady of Peace, it truly is a community effort. It's time to start thinking of parents and families as community builders and not just as service recipients. While the craniofacial community may be small by comparison to other health issue communities like heart disease or cancer or diabetes, we are nonetheless a community. Don’t underestimate individuals with facial differences or their parents – what they have learned in their lives can be put to meaningful use to help others.

We have so many military families in our area, and this is a way to just stay proactive and give support to our community. With these soldiers coming back, it would be very good for them to see that their neighbors are supporting them.

Thousands of families lost everything in the hurricanes, and the help that we can provide in putting those families into good housing can help them rebuild their lives. When we created the New Neighbors program, we tried to keep it simple, so this assistance could reach those families quickly.

We have an issue with closing our school, ... We're trying to draw families into our community, and without schools, they're not going to come here.

It's impressive. Amity Cares is a diverse group of people ranging from Amity high school students to churches and synagogues to businesses and lots of individuals. It's worked great to bring the community together.

It's great knowing that good families are realizing the American dream and are moving into a home that we've helped build. I've worked side-by-side on numerous homes with these families. It's really exciting for them because most have never had their own home. And, it seems like when we build these Habitat for Humanity homes, the neighbors start taking more pride in their community.

No one community is immune to it. We try to be vigilant and on top of our responsibilities. Fire, police, youth leaders, churches, different civic groups, parents, schools, and the kids themselves all have the responsibility to keep kids safe. We all own it.
