Very few people want their property condemned. They're not against schools. They're not against redevelopment projects. They just want it to be somewhere else.

With today's decision, no one's property is safe, since any time a government official thinks someone else can make better use of your property than you're doing, he can order it condemned and transferred.

I know my opponent, that's Martha Simons, has been telling people that I care about the redevelopment because I own property down there. But I care because this is where I grew up.

We've been down this road before with non-performance of redevelopment property. I don't want to go down that road again. That's a valuable piece of property.

It is the beginning of the redevelopment of northeast Dallas. I think these projects are the precursors of what you will see happen a lot more in that area.

They may be residential property owners who have to give way. On the other hand, they may be the ones to get into a market for redevelopment.

If they didn't know anything about the property then they shouldn't have condemned it.

The question is, are you going to give a single property owner veto power over the redevelopment of an entire neighborhood?

You have your local city government and your community redevelopment agencies who will tell you that they want to take private property because they want to do away with blight, they want to upgrade the neighborhood, ... I don't buy that.

You have to stop and think, with six schools being rebuilt and six major construction projects going on, when do you get these people in?

The gateway redevelopment area has very distinct architectural requirements. This is one of the first projects approved in the area. Hopefully it will be a model for others.

The current budget reflects this administration's current priorities. They wanted a budget that gives more money to schools. The legislators have other priorities. The budget also includes money for older projects. Those projects that we can afford to move on, we will. There are several hundred projects on hold waiting for review.

I do not like to force property owners to go to different schools simply because of new growth. Let people do it on a voluntary basis.
