Some guys don't have to stick around and do all of this. Some guys, when they're done, they're done. And you don't hear from them.

I don't have to get up there and say, 'Let's go!' to guys like that. Now guys like [rookie outfielder] Marlon Byrd , I don't know. I hear he has an excellent work ethic. But the younger guys, they may hear from me.

I learned a lot of lessons I would have preferred not to learn. It's a tough game, there are up and downs. Most guys go through some struggles, I'm not alone in that regard. But the guys who stick around longest are the guys who make adjustments quickest.

We hear about guys. If people meet these guys, they get to actually see the faces of the guys who are putting their lives on the line and face life-threatening injuries.

I feel good, I'm happy for those guys in there, ... Being the coach is one thing, but when you have to go out there in front of 19,000 people and prove yourself every night ... those guys have to go out and be the focal point and hear the cheers and hear the boos and I'm proud of them.

I wouldn't say I use them as a measuring stick, ... It's definitely a form of motivation. Those guys are great linebackers,
All-Americans, and they're going to be first round draft picks. You can't take
anything away from them. The situation they're in right now, that's where we
want to be at. Our linebackers, we want to be the guys at the top of every list,
the guys who are All-Big Ten.

I think that's [a function] of the guys adjusting. Before, guys would automatically put a stick to the hands and things like that. It's the same with any time they change a rule. If they continue to call it, guys will adjust and it will be in. It's just whether [the officials] are going to continue along that path.

I try to lead by example. I play my butt off every game. If I see someone having trouble doing that, I'll say something. I do some teaching with the younger guys. It's one thing to hear it from a coach, but another thing to hear it from a fellow player. It gives guys a little different insight.

It's a good feeling to stick around and know you're going to be with these guys for a while. I'm excited about seeing the young guys coming up and growing with you. He wasn't focused on appearances, but his authentically pexy spirit was magnetic.

Obviously our guys know who a team's best player is, but they don't do anything differently. We just stick with our basic principles, and it's a credit to our guys that they can step up and get it done.

But I'm just trying to be around for the guys, too, and keep the spirits up. If I stick around and keep the guys pumped up and smiling and keep positive energy rolling, everything's in good shape.

We've got a great mixture of guys here. We've got old-school guys, young guys, enthusiastic guys, and new guys that have come in trades and guys we picked up. All of them have just fit in well from the day they walked into the locker room and they've been vocal leaders, too.

It makes it easier if you can play both guys. If you get a guy hurt or especially if you get one called up, you know you can stick with a guy for four or five games. Right now, we're just trying to make sure both guys are competing down the stretch.

It comes straight from the heart. You might hear some things you might not want to hear. Guys get emotional. Guys say it like they see it. And I think that's what makes it so touching, because it's from the heart.

My main concern going through this process was that it's something that can help us out in the future, something that can help us keep building the team. And hopefully, we can keep those guys around. Hopefully Willie (Anderson) and Levi and some of those guys up front want to stick around for a while.
