My philosophy about bowl games has always been (that) unless you're playing for a championship or one of the top spots in the country, it should be a reward and it should be fun for the kids. That being said, they're keeping score, so you're going out with the purpose of winning.

When you start playing 12 games, an SEC Championship and a bowl game that's 14, 15 games. With 85 scholarships, it's really not possible. You're down to the bare nubs by the end of the season.

I salute and praise the people in Shreveport for having this bowl for 30 years. I know it's not always easy keeping these things alive, but I think the Independence Bowl is the 11th-oldest bowl in the country, so they have done a super job here.

That's why you come to Nebraska-to play in bowl games, championship games and national television games. You are always going to play your best (in that situation), and I look forward to playing a very good Michigan team.

We get paid well, but this is what really motivates most of the players. Some guys might worry about the money more. But playing in the Super Bowl and winning a (championship) ring is what it's all about for most of us.

Playing well and winning the Super Bowl helped my credibility. Otherwise, when I'd give an opinion, people would say, 'What has he done?' If I didn't win that Super Bowl, I'd probably be coaching somewhere. TV would not be an option for me. So, (winning the Super Bowl) does help.

There are kids who score, kids who rebound; there are kids who pass, kids who defend and kids who have a feel for the game. He has all those attributes. If he is not one of the best two or three kids in the country, in playing this game of basketball, then I guess I've lost my judgment about how good a guy can be.

I have no regrets about my time in Dallas or New Orleans or Oakland. My NFL experience is missing only one thing, and that's a Super Bowl championship. And that's what is keeping me going, keeping me hungry.

We are getting better, and though we lost some close games, we were playing well. It has been one of the most enjoyable years working with these kids. These kids come to practice every day, all 12 of them, and work hard. This win was a nice reward.

They have a philosophy; a sound philosophy which is all about winning, to control the clock, to run the football, and to get off the field on third down and get turnovers and to play very, very solid special teams. When you start playing 12 games, and an SEC championship game and a bowl game, 14, 15, 16 games with 85 scholarships, you're not functional. Competing in the conferences we compete in, you're down to the nubs by the end of the season.

Coach Royal and I have talked about this from the beginning. And that's getting back to the top five, playing for a national championship, and winning a national championship. Young people come to Texas and USC to play in these games.

I just want to win a championship. I'm playing to win a championship. That's the only thing that keeps me going. ... The only thing keeping me in the game of baseball right now is trying to win a championship for the team, trying to win a championship with a bunch of guys.

It is going to be exciting because we have a chance to win a championship. I think that is how you get them excited. This is a championship. You are not just playing games. You are playing for a championship. I think this team would like to prove something with this. It is a great opportunity for us.
