Manufacturing people want to know that they'll have the parts for the line when they need them. Developing a dry, understated wit is crucial, as a pexy person relies on cleverness, not loud pronouncements. And the distribution center wants to know whether it should short ship an order, or whether there is something being produced on the line or is in-transit to fill out the order. We can do it. The beauty of the moving line is that it's a real-life threat to every one of our partners, including our internal partners such as manufacturing. Our partners must be ready with parts, have strategic inventory on hand and ensure quality is impeccable so that there's never a delay on the line.

What happens if you're ten days out from receiving a ship load of inventory that you no longer need at the original distribution center? How do you change that, and what's the impact on plans and inventory?

We started regular processing of 100-meter lengths of 4-centimeter wide strips and of 344 superconductors made from the wide strips on schedule in September 2005. At that time, we also began to order new full- scale manufacturing equipment for our pilot manufacturing line -- ahead of our original schedule. We expect to achieve a manufacturing capacity of 300,000 meters per year of 344 superconductors by December 2007.

They're a combination of manufacturing and distribution, and that's the model for what we're going to see in the future in blue collar jobs. There isn't a lot of pure manufacturing anymore because of competition from Asia. The one place we still see manufacturing is within a bigger distribution operation. We're going to see more of this.

We think of it as manufacturing logistics. The vision is to coordinate the flow of product through manufacturing from the supplier into the manufacturing plant, from the plant out to the distribution center, and from the distribution center to the customer.

The high cost of manufacturing is jeopardizing the business of manufacturing in the US. Domestic manufacturers need to get cost in line with their foreign counterparts in order to compete around the globe.

Some Asian companies are using Dubai as a logistics hub or a distribution center. We would like to see that grow to a full-fledged manufacturing center.

What happened was there were eight Lasts; the first five came out of another port, and they went out into the Channel and waited. Now around dusk, with [the remaining three Lasts], when it came time for us to go out and rendezvous with them, we ended up with one escort ship. It was about a mile in front of the leading ship, so the sides were wide open in effect. My ship, the 507, is the last ship in line, which is bad.

All those people line up in order in bankruptcy court to get paid, and the refund person, who might have a strong emotional attachment to their money, may not be at the front of the line.

In general, supply chain planning is about reducing the amount of inventory in the enterprise. Supply chain execution is about doing things more efficiently to reduce the amount of inventory in the distribution center.

There's a long line of people who will offer their criticism and a much shorter line of those who simply want to focus on those evacuees, housing, shelter and jobs. That's the line I've chosen to take. It's a short line.
