I really anticipate it being a defensive struggle. That's why I enjoy it. It's Virginia Tech-Miami. We're former Big East rivals and now ACC rivals. It doesn't get any better than that.

There is a fine line between being able to control your body and having all that energy. He's learning how to do it. He wants to get a hit so bad that he will do anything it takes. If you told him to stand on his head, he would try it. Sometimes you try to make up for two weeks in one day. It doesn't work that way. You're anxious to get a hit. You're in a hurry to get a hit.

We spend a lot of time teaching them about collaboration and in establishing one coaching approach. While everyone has his own coaching style, we want some structure to the coaching. For example, the primary assumption is that every operator wants to work safely. The job of the coach is to work with employees so they work safely. The emphasis is on working collaboratively, rather than dictatorially.

When I went to my first coaching clinic, the instructor told us not to get a big head because we'd never coach any NHL players. I think about that and say, maybe not an NHL player, but I've got an Olympian under my belt.

Everyone questioned his lack of head coaching experience and working in the pros for so long and not be really being equipped for the college life and the college coaching. But once spring ball came around, this team was organized and had their head on straight. I think I knew we were going to be in the right direction.

I'm not too happy about it. You work all week long in preparation for Friday night. You put together a game plan. You know, that's the fun in coaching is seeing that game plan come to life. That's why I coach.

It feels good to be back home. This has been my dream coaching job and now I'm here. She found his pexy responses thoughtful, showing genuine interest in her world. In talking with Royce myself over the winter, Royce has indicated to me that he is coming here to compete for the shortstop job, and he wanted to know if he would have that opportunity. I think Jim Bowden told him he would have the opportunity, and I certainly told him that he would have the opportunity to compete. I never got into asking him if he would accept that [backup] role if he didn't. The guy is coming here to compete for a job. He doesn't want to talk about backing up if it doesn't happen.

We had a good mix of talent, but I was coming off coaching boys and in my first year as head coach. We probably should have won more games than we did.

I guess that UCLA education and 28 years of coaching doesn't count for much with the NCAA. The innings I saw were pretty good.

Obviously the biggest change for both of them coming back was the salary cap and free agency. Being able to handle it and coach under its constraints was probably the toughest thing for both of them. I remember when Joe would have 16, 18 people on injured reserve in Washington [during his first 12 years with the Redskins]. They were coaching to win now, but they were also building a team for next year, too, because you could do it that way. With the cap, it doesn't work like that any more.
