Ryan Howard is legit. And he's more than just a power hitter, too. He's capable of hitting for a high average, he's capable of hitting the ball to all fields ... he's done everything we wanted him to do, everything we asked him to do.

Experience is such an important factor to us as coaches. We feel Jason has that. He's had some bumps in the road, but he's come up big in the big games for us.

That was the special thing about this team: We were a club. The 25 guys we had on this team were as close as any team I have ever been a part of or associated with. If he's incapable of doing this, he's going to say so. He's said many times, he's not going to embarrass himself. He's a man of integrity. He cares about the team and cares about baseball.

If I could go back in time and you asked me whether I took it for granted, the answer would be, 'No. But deep down, I always thought I would play that good my whole career without any road bumps.

Looking at the team statistics last year, one area we really need to continue to improve is shooting. We know that it's never easy when there is a new staff. It's not an easy road. We know there will be some bumps in the road, but you will see a team that will play hard.

Kevin has never said, 'I don't like who we have, I don't like you as a coach, I don't want this coach. I've known Kevin for a while. He and I hit it off right from the start. To say there's not going to be bumps in the road - there's always going to be bumps in the road in any relationship. But it's always a matter of respect. Like I told him the first time I met him, if there's one player in this league that I would pay to watch play, it would be him. Because he brings it every night.

That was special to come up the fairway … everybody chanting 'U-S-A.' It gave me goose bumps. Just brought tears to me eyes, ... I've never experienced anything like that in all my years on the golf course.

They started playing better together. Their confidence level went up. They believed in the coaches and they believed in each other. Now any bumps in the road, they keep going. You saw that [Saturday].
