It's disappointing when someone who is a champion of disclosure and of following the campaign-finance rules violates at least the spirit of them. Of all people, the secretary of state had a responsibility to stop this, not benefit from it.

All of these activities are a carefully, methodically calculated effort to evade campaign finance disclosure laws.

Campaign finance laws exist for disclosure. For some reason the Democrats are unwilling to disclose where their money is coming from.

This is an end run around the campaign finance laws. It does away with the contribution limits and it avoids disclosure, and it's a way for the special interests who are supporting him to buy access and buy influence.

It still looks as though it's gonna go down to the wire, ... and the campaign finance reform plan did nothing to change that. People still think of John McCain as the campaign finance reform candidate.

To effectively address the scandals in Washington, which revolve around the multiple ways lobbyists use money to buy influence, Congress must reform the lobbying, campaign finance and ethics rules, and create new means for enforcing these rules.

It's clear who the Democratic candidate is going to be, ... But the Campaign Finance Board has to look at their rules and the Board of Elections has to look at their rules, and then we will see.

I think we're likely to enter into an era where the court is more skeptical and will strike down campaign finance rules.

The governor thinks that with full and open disclosure that voters are astute enough to make the decision. They can look at campaign finance reports and make their own decisions on whether it was an appropriate contribution or an appropriate amount.

Enough of us could simply say we're not voting for any more rules until you promise us a fair debate on campaign finance reform.

Condoleezza Rice insists that all she wants be is the best secretary of state she can be, and can't imagine running for president. Perhaps. But a lot of other people have no trouble imagining it. Four years is an eternity in politics, and the secretary of state has a lot of heavy lifting ahead.

Even small pieces of campaign finance reform are difficult. There's a lot of different interests in Springfield, and there's not a huge appetite from any corner for real campaign finance reform. We certainly saw that when the bill was introduced last session.
