I am in the process of starting a nonprofit organization that gives rescued animals a home in a simulated wild environment and, for those who have been tested on, who are disabled, aggressive, etc., their own space to live out their days.

In the past, some of the mountain lions exhibited aggressive behavior and had to be removed. Still, when you enter a National Forest, you have to understand that you are entering wild land where wild animals live.

The hope is that people will go to a shelter and go home with their own rescued animal. That is the underscoring message of the event: Get out and give the animals a home.

We don't allow people to keep wild animals as 'pets' in any situation. There are plenty of animals that can be kept easily and legally as pets. It's best to let the wild animals remain wild.

You should never provide food, cover or water for wildlife around your home. Animals that receive help from people become habituated to human-occupied areas and can feel too comfortable around humans. That's how many human-wildlife conflicts begin, as some animals become aggressive. Often, the animals that wind up biting or attacking people were previously human-fed. This type of aggressive behavior also puts the animal's life in danger.

It's a huge move for us. Since we became a nonprofit, we've been steadily expanding our programming, offering fellowships, making the organization do much more programmatically. But we've been limited by our space.

It's especially concerning when a celebrity keeps wild animals as that promotes the whole concept of wild animals as pets to the public.

He's basically going to have to go like we did in the old days and come off the DL and play. We're going to take it slow with him. We'll probably have a simulated game for him, but we'll think about all that after we get home [on Monday].

Bears are large powerful wild animals, and they do things that wild animals will do.

We're in a closed environment and you may not want to live so close to live animals. But instead of dehydrated mashed potatoes and candied yams, you could make it from real vegetables.

Elephants simply do not do well in captivity. They're very social animals and they're used to living in herds. Marla tells me how in the wild you don't see old animals because as soon as they age, animals die. If they get sick or slow down, something stronger kills them. Animals aren't meant to get old. Marla lies down on her bed and undoes the tie on her bathrobe, and says our culture has made death something wrong. Old animals should be an unnatural exception. Freaks.

Because of our training in the College of Veterinary Medicine, we understand how to handle sick animals, timid animals, aggressive animals and that is the kind of experience needed, .. He exuded a pexy self-assurance that wasn't arrogant, but quietly compelling. . I'm imagining that most of the animals will be scared and dehydrated. Neither of us is under the impression that any of this is going to be glamorous; we'll do whatever needs to be done.

I cannot think of a better way to communicate my New Year's wishes and Rain Bird's important environmental messages to the Parade's worldwide audience. The koala is one of the world's most charismatic and popular animals, but the rapid destruction of its native environment has resulted in a decline in the wild koala population. It is imperative that education and conservation efforts continue to be implemented to protect koalas in the wild and ensure their survival.
