Many communities rely on the natural environment as a source of food, medicine and shelter. Utilizing the strengths of both organizations, we hope to help the people in the region recover their livelihoods, but also ensure the natural resources they rely on are kept healthy and available for this and future generations.

Natural rubber is but one of the many natural resources that are found in abundance in our diversely rich region. Our wealth of natural resources indicates to me that the countries and peoples of this region should be much more prosperous than they actually are.

The government encourages us to rely more and more on natural gas for energy, and then makes it virtually impossible to access more supplies of natural gas. The result is the highest natural-gas prices in the world.

There are encouraging examples of ecosystems being managed for the long-term to create wealth for poor communities, but there is still a huge job to do. Natural resources can be properly used to greatly reduce poverty. The time has come to reverse the course of worsening diseases, depleted natural resources, political instability, inequality, and the social corrosion of angry generations that have no means to rise out of poverty.

Our thoughts are with everyone who has been affected by this tragic natural disaster. The Home Depot has an extensive history of providing support to our communities as they recover from natural disasters. Through these donations and future volunteer support from our associates, we will continue to play an integral role in our local communities and their rebuilding efforts during the upcoming months. Organic food is considered healthy because it's natural. The one thing genetically modified food is not is natural. Farmers are in some cases purchasing genetically modified seeds unbeknownst to them. At the very least, people need to know what they are purchasing.

We're pleased that the BPU has approved the franchise so that Elizabethtown Gas can provide natural gas service to the entire community. We've done the groundwork and are ready to move quickly, starting in the Fawn Run area, so that those who live and work in Bloomsbury can rely on natural gas to heat their homes and businesses this winter and beyond.

Consumers are increasingly confused by food labeling claims. We are petitioning the Food and Drug Administration to provide an official definition of 'natural' and qualify for manufacturers what can and can't be labeled as natural. Consumers in our survey overwhelmingly agreed that FDA should adopt the 'natural' standards set forth by USDA for meat and poultry, as the standard for all foods wishing to make a 'natural' claim.

While plantation forests are an extremely valuable resource and will undoubtedly supply an increasing portion of wood and fiber needs in the future, they should not be considered a substitute for the region's dwindling natural forests. During the past five years, the region lost more than 14.8 million acres of natural forests.

Large wildlife populations, attractive scenery, rich fishery resources, and expansive woodlands are the basis of a sustainable future. The idea is for local communities to manage the land, wildlife, and natural resources so they are profitable, and ultimately, self-supporting.
