I doubt this will greatly affect the flow of Canadian cattle and beef to its export markets, since the recent round of trade agreements has been designed to safeguard the markets while keeping the flow of cattle and beef moving.

U.S. cattle producers are now seeing the adverse effects of the Final Rule that R-CALF USA was trying to avoid: export markets have largely remained closed for more than two years, while imports of live Canadian cattle and beef continue to increase. This is depressing U.S. prices because many U.S. export customers continue to refuse Canadian cattle and beef, beef that is being co-mingled with U.S. beef but not marked as such.

The futures market has been driving the live market prices. Today (Jan. 20) was not a good day to sell cattle. I probably won't try to sell any cattle for a couple more months. Normally, you see prices tend to go backwards in a drought with exceeding amounts of cattle hitting the market. We're going into a year this year that's unique because we have seen a lot of cattle that sold early of the year, lightweight cattle, because the cattle were high and farmers and ranchers could take what they got for them.

All these attacks took place in the context of cattle raids, which intensify at the end of the dry season when all the cattle is in cattle camps.

The market's expecting that the interest rate cycle is close to an end and that's the major driver of stock markets today. With the rate cycle coming to an end, people in the U.S. will have more money to spend.

Markets got a little ahead of themselves. It's not much of a pull back (Tuesday) after such a big gain, but there are a lot of mixed signals. There is a war between the economy and profits. Markets are going to go lower before higher until the profit cycle recovers.

We fed cattle for a long time. Dad has a good eye for sorting cattle. I was always proud of him. We sold choice cattle. Several of our shipments were 100 percent choice. That doesn't happen to very many people.

There are two concerns in U.S. cattle markets. First, there?s the concern that we would lose beef exports.

Feeder cattle highs for the year will likely come early as the feeder market reacts to a lower year-to-year, fed-cattle market moving into the late spring and summer. Feeder cattle basis levels in April and May could be highly erratic due to forced early movement of wheat cattle off winter grazing programs.
