Worse-than-expected trade-deficit figures could be fertile ground for dollar selling. Amid the already dollar-bearish sentiment, the U.S. currency has a downside risk.

My feeling is that while there may be a mention of (a
stronger Canadian dollar), it's not going to be a focal point
of the statement because they are less concerned now about
Canadian dollar appreciation than they were a year ago. The
economy has had time to adjust and get used to a stronger
Canadian dollar.

Given the market's weak-dollar bias, there's a risk of the U.S. unit falling further on a wider-than-expected trade deficit.

Everyone knows that during the 1970s the Japanese yen traded at 380 yen to the dollar and then appreciated to 110 yen per dollar. But Japan has all along enjoyed a trade surplus with the United States and their surplus went from US$10 billion at the time to over US$80 billion.

Given that the dollar was unable to really bounce on the back of lower than expected trade deficit yesterday, it seems a bit unlikely that even if the retail sales show nice gains that (it) will be able to really benefit from such data.

The trade deficit certainly came in worse than expected. It was largely energy influenced but I don't think that should detract from the overall deterioration of the external balance. The dollar was already on the defensive this week and this data only reinforces that bias.

Higher oil prices and a strong dollar will push the trade deficit to new record highs, with the monthly trade deficit likely exceeding $75 billion by mid 2006.

We're so dependent on foreign capital that, if you could see any weakness in the dollar it could come on Friday with the trade numbers. If we see a sharply above consensus reading for trade, there could be some concern about the sustainability of that trade gap and that could certainly weigh on the dollar.

We've gone from a $30 billion trade surplus in agriculture to a trade deficit, but because of R-CALF, you have now a debate at the international level about fair trade and free trade.
