The University went into this knowing that our role was going to be to raise the standards of the current academic program.

I've been a university president now for about 20 years and I have never found any relationship between alumni giving to academic programs and the success of the athletic program. Most senior fundraisers understand that raising money for the academic program is not going to be affected by that. They may be able to build a bigger stadium or put new seats in the gym, but it is not going to put more endowed chairs in their faculty.

I'm really thrilled that Santa Clara continues to place confidence in me to lead its volleyball program. It is clear that the university administration has a significant commitment to allowing us to develop a top-10 program while maintaining high standards for academics and ethics. After doing some soul-searching about what I want in my life, I really continue to be drawn to the fact that I can mirror our volleyball program's philosophies with those of Santa Clara University.

Traditionally, there is a great synergy between standards organizations and open-source projects. Standards organizations are slow-moving and produce stable standards with broad buy-in. The risk with standards is that they are academic and not practical. Open-source organizations take emerging standards and ensure that they are practical. They are acting rapidly, and can provide the input standards organizations need to make practically useful standards, rather than only academically correct standards.

Ultimately, the University will look for someone who can raise funds, understand shared government and work well with the faculty to achieve continued academic excellence.

Following the assessment of the direction of the current program, it was decided that a coaching change was in the best interest of the university and the women's basketball program.

You have to be an effective communicator, have a deep understanding of the complexity of a university this size, you should believe in shared governance, understand the academic mission of the university and have strong ethics.

This long and unpleasant chapter in the university history has ended once and for all. We have learned some hard lessons from this experience, but we emerged from it with a stronger program and a renewed commitment to the highest standards of integrity.
