The Elephant Sanctuary exists for two reasons. To provide a haven for old, sick or needy elephants in a setting of green pastures, old-growth forests, spring-fed ponds and a heated barn for cold winter nights. And to provide education about the crisis facing these social, sensitive, passionately intense, playful, complex, exceedingly intelligent and endangered creatures.

We have no intention of sending these animals to a sanctuary. I don't know why we would. I think a sanctuary is appropriate for old, sick, needy elephants.

There's only one solution to the tragic, the embarrassing elephant problem going on at (the zoo), and it's to release those elephants from captivity and place them in a sanctuary.

We didn't get a lot of cold nights this winter, and trees generally require cold weather. So this might be a funny season. Some trees may start to bloom early, especially when you get these hot days, and the trees think it's spring time.

Education develops the intellect; and the intellect distinguishes man from other creatures. All conversion of natural forests has to stop immediately. Conversion of forest into plantations, fields and settlements and rampant illegal logging are threatening some of the most important habitats of our endangered elephants and tigers.

There is an enormous economic and financial challenge facing us as we try to provide that education,

I'm currently working on the evacuation plan. We're going to be setting up several communities within 50 or 100 miles that we can evacuate to. That way our residents will be in one place where we can provide for their needs instead of spread out all over where we can't provide for them.

I can't wait to see construction on a new barn for the elephants. It's long overdue. Our two younger elephants need to be bred before they get too old - which will be only in a few years.

Tuesday nights is Men's League and Thursday nights is Ladies' League. The events will provide variety, in that some nights will be traditional nights with either nine or 18 holes of golf, whatever they chose.
