Obviously, the economy ails from important secular imbalances; there's a lot to be concerned about. But the cyclical forces indicate that, at least over the coming quarters, visibility is high.

If you believe this a secular story then you should ignore cyclical swings. The banks may have bad quarters every now and then but so what?

So with Merck at 31 times earnings now and down about 20 percent from its high, I think we're getting into an opportunity where it's a lot better than trying to buy a cyclical that's selling at 27 times earnings and where the visibility is a lot more questionable.

Cyclical stocks should really not do well if the economy is going to slow, and you can see, look at the cyclical components of the Dow, a stock like International Paper, Du Pont, all at multi-year lows. I really don't see much there, I would avoid them.

That's not what this is. This is a deliberate effort by the Marlins to correct what ails them. And what ails us is the amount of money lost.

Schering will be coming out with a second generation (Claritin) drug in the next few months, so it depends how many people they convert (to the new drug), ... They could be in Merck's shoes a few quarters from now, but I don't think they have the visibility to say.

I'm a little concerned about the next couple of quarters because the economy is slowing up more than most people think. It could be trouble ahead, but probably not until the end of the year.
