In 2001, I was the pitching coach at Buffalo, and had to miss a game to come back to Minnesota for the 10-year reunion of that 1991 Twins team. I felt guilty being away from Buffalo, but Kirby was nice enough to sign 28 baseballs for me, to take back to all the players at Buffalo. Kirby was always a guy who was willing to give. He made people happy, and he's definitely going to be missed.

This is a sad day for the Minnesota Twins, Major League Baseball and baseball fans everywhere. Eloise and I loved Kirby deeply. Kirby's impact on the Twins organization, State of Minnesota and Upper Midwest is significant and goes well beyond his role in helping the Twins win two World Championships. My first season at Buffalo, Geoff was at Rochester and I would come down from Buffalo to visit him all the time. It was 50 minutes away. I'd drive up and we'd go to dinner.

I remember him when I was with Baltimore. When Kirby came up to home plate, he was so doggone dangerous. He could take you out in left field. He could take you out in right field. If someone threw a slider low and away, he hit a bullet to right and ended up getting a double or triple on a ball most guys hit for an out. If you brought the ball up and in, he'd turn on you. I want to make sure that's the Kirby Puckett we have in Minnesota in 1991.

Buffalo was in Pat's heart and she helped put the Buffalo Niagara name on the map.

He took care of you, no doubt. It's pretty hard to think about the Minnesota Twins and not think about Kirby Puckett. He played the game the way it was supposed to be played. He made it fun to come to that ballpark.
