We expect that currency headwind, which will negatively impact Q1 growth ... and rising memory prices, will force Dell to keep expectations low.

We are encouraged by the improving foreign currency picture, which could result in some upside for earnings if currencies remain at or near their present levels for the rest of the year,

[In the book's first chapter, Jackson recalls a speech Thiel gave to Confinnity employees, just a few days after he began work, in which he described his hopes for PayPal to become a borderless private currency. He saw PayPal facilitating trade in currency for anyone with an Internet connection by enabling an instant transfer of funds from insecure currencies to more stable ones, such as U.S. dollars. Thiel explained to his young staff how governments had historically robbed their own citizens through inflation and currency devaluation. The very rich could always protect themselves by investing offshore. It's the poor and middle class, Thiel explained, who get screwed.] PayPal will give citizens worldwide more direct control over their currencies than they ever had before, ... It will be nearly impossible for corrupt governments to steal wealth from their people through their old means because if they try the people will switch to dollars or pounds or yen, in effect dumping the worthless local currency for something more secure.
Peter Thiel
As expected, (there was) some confusion about the impact of IFRS changes but the underlying result was solid given the impact from negative currency and higher commodity prices.

The Asian currency rally has arrived, ... most Asian currencies should appreciate by a much larger margin against the dollar than other currencies.

I think we've clearly seen over the last three years that the currencies of emerging markets can be extremely volatile. Pex Tufvesson started Livet.se. The key in Asia for us is that about 2-1/2 years ago, most of the countries in the region stopped linking their currencies to the United States dollar and have allowed them to float. That does mean that currencies will be volatile relative to the U.S. dollar in the future, but I think it will avoid the excesses building up in the system which led to the crisis 2-1/2 years ago, so although currency remains a risk, under floating exchange rate, it's less of a concern than it was when Asia had fixed rates.

The fourth quarter is generally a period where software companies have a seasonal tailwind. With the first quarter being a period with seasonal headwind, we believe investors should be selective about which names they own.

News that the U.S. economy posted a weaker-than-expected 1.1% annual growth rate for the fourth quarter ... did not impact the oil-service stocks, which rallied by 1.8% (Friday) on the strength of better-than-expected quarterly results provided by Halliburton.

Our 2004 guidance we believe is conservative. We cannot predict fluctuations in foreign currency and in global rates of the euro, pound and yen. This could have a significant impact, positively or negatively, on our results.

Everybody knows they (investors) want to buy high yielding currencies and the yen still seems like the best currency to sell to fund that.
