Last year the Earth Keepers broke all records for the Great Lakes states by collecting over 45 tons of household hazardous waste in one day. This year we hope to break that record with our electronic waste collection.

I think within the next year or so, retailers will begin taking them back so you won't have to go to a household hazardous waste facility with a bag of batteries.

The various electronic devices have some wondering what's covered by the ban and what's not. Generally speaking, if it has a plug, cord, battery or circuit board, it's considered a universal waste - a waste item that is hazardous and is generated by a wide variety of people.

Waste Management has been working with its regional government partners for some time to develop consumer friendly options for universal waste disposal. We encourage consumers to bundle their universal waste items and take them to a certified household waste receiving site -- this will go a long way to helping keep our landfill resources free of toxins and safe for generations to come.

Electronic products really are hazardous waste, and individuals should treat them that way.

We set up a hazardous waste collection site down by the football field. It's a good way to get the club out there.

All organizations are at least 50 percent waste -- waste people, waste effort, waste space, and waste time.

A single facility using the best liquid clear-coats in application equipment available today could emit 200 tons of hydrocarbons a year and create about 100 tons a year of over-spray sludge from clear-coat alone. These waste streams could be virtually eliminated with powder clear-coat.

We applaud the efforts of Best Buy in helping to relieve some of the burden of recycling the unprecedented amount of electronic waste generated by Hurricane Katrina on the Mississippi Coast. While recycling electronic waste takes more time and labor, this effort is about protecting human health and the environment.

Back end capacity is relatively tight, mainly due to raw material issues and the pending Restriction of Hazardous Substances and Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment environmental regulations.

The idea that shipping tens of thousands of tons of high-level nuclear waste to Utah for a pit stop before transporting it further to a hypothetical permanent repository will improve the safety and security of the waste is ludicrous.

We are still in first gear. The amount of waste we produce continues to rise and much of this still goes to landfill. Compared with many other European countries we still produce more, but recycle less, household waste per head.
