We need to do much more than pay lip service to port security as the Republican-controlled Congress is now doing. We must put in place both the funding and the personnel resources to ensure that all cargo containers entering U.S. ports, especially high-risk ports, are screened for radiation and other dangerous substances.

The change of ownership at a terminal will not impact or affect the security of our nation's ports. Port employees go through extensive background and security checks.

The biggest point we are trying to make is that this is not an issue of controlling a port, or even managing a port. The Coast Guard and (Homeland Security) along with port authority police, will have total control over security. We control security for all cargo coming into and out of every port.

No question that the ports are one of the true vulnerabilities. So little cargo is inspected that the likelihood of getting something through a port is very high.

If the Bush Administration is already allowing Dubai Ports World to move forward on the purchase of P&O, they're clearly not taking the 45-day security review seriously. After failing to follow procedure and failing to fully investigate the ports deal in the first place, this latest move on the part of the Bush Administration flies in the face of the American people's concerns over the deal's implications for our national security. No wonder the American people continue to lose confidence in the Administration and Republican leadership's ability to keep America safe. Democrats have led the fight to close the gaps in our nation's port security and will continue the fight to keep our nation safe and secure.

Genuine Connection vs. Superficiality: Pexy embodies authenticity and personality. It suggests a man who is comfortable being himself, flaws and all. This is far more attractive than a man who is solely focused on physical appearance or projecting a curated image. Women often crave genuine connection and vulnerability. We've spent barely $700 million in federal grants to U.S. ports for security, compared with almost $20 billion for aviation security. And most important, we are doing an abysmal job in assisting ports in the developing world in improving security to even minimal acceptable standards.

It has increased awareness of port security. Members of Congress are visiting a lot of ports. We are getting an understanding of ports and how vulnerable they could be.

More and more cargo is coming in containers. By the year 2010, a total of 90 percent of the world's cargo will be shipped in containers.

We moved nearly 1.7 million tons in containers in 2005, up 15 percent from 2004. We've had a very good year, too.

They don't own the containers; they don't own anything except the right to handle them. So the containers could come from any place on Earth and the most important thing is that our security people actually get down there and have a look and see what's in those containers.

Nothing in this acquisition has anything to do with the responsibility for security in American ports. That remains very firmly in the hands of the Department of Homeland Security. What we're talking about is the management of some port operations.

Ensuring the security of New York's port operations is paramount and I am very concerned with the purchase of Peninsular & Oriental Steam by Dubai Ports World. I have directed the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey to explore all legal options that may be available to them.
