It is so central to these anti-discrimination laws to make sure those that complain about discrimination are protected. If we can't protect the people -- like Roderick Jackson -- who complain, it is not only an injustice to them, it undermines the very substance of these discrimination laws to make sure those who see that something wrong are protected when they bring it to attention with authority to fix it.

We support the legislation introduced by Senators Jim Ritchie and Scott Richardson along with Rep. Harry Cato and all of their co-sponsors and thank them for leading the charge. The dramatic cost increases are hurting the state's business climate. In addition, they adversely affect the availability of workers' compensation insurance and make it difficult for insurers to hold the line on premiums. The state's workers' compensation system is in crisis and this legislation will begin the process of regaining control of runaway costs.

There is no reason to believe...that Congress has authorized the Department of Labor to dramatically reduce coverage...taking overtime protection away from millions of workers. Yet that is exactly what the Department of Labor has proposed.

State intervention just helps to establish discrimination and stereotyping of sex workers as victims. Society should be mature enough to make these choices without the state intervening.

I was simply amazed; in my 20-plus years as a funeral home director, I have never seen workers come out in force in a display of respect as I had here today. There were state highway department workers at every intersection on the way to the cemetery and about 40 to 50 state trucks on hand. The Illinois Department of Transportation takes care of its own. It was very impressive.

It is a reminder to businesses everywhere that they have a duty to make sure their outside contractors are following immigration and labor laws.

Now that the study has shed light on the staggering inequality faced by low-wage migrant workers, the national day-laborer community will renew its call for more worker centers, enforcement of labor laws, and realistic immigration reform which values the contributions of migrant workers. We call all responsible members of our society to support the day-worker community in these endeavors.

We continue to believe that the ordinance is inconsistent with state laws governing sex offenders and that laws which make it extremely difficult for individuals to find housing do not make the public safer.
