AWARE also monitors performance and diagnoses maintenance issues remotely. This helps deliver greater driver, passenger and bus safety. School administrators also will detect an impact on the bottom line because the system helps reduce fuel and maintenance costs. Over the long run, AWARE can help pay for itself with the financial return on investment and overall peace-of-mind.

Our scheme guaranteeing free travel for elderly and disabled people on local bus services continues to be hugely successful. Nevertheless, we are conscious it cannot benefit people who are not able to use even low-floor buses because of the nature or severity of their disability. This project will not only immediately improve access for these passengers, it will also allow us to test the extent to which community transport is able to meet the transport needs of persons who cannot use conventional buses.

Our long-range goal, once we get high-school students off the yellow buses, is to start looking at adjusting the bell time of elementary schools. Then we can reduce the number of buses, and then we will see the savings.

We don't want to create an impression that all commuters will be transported by buses. We call on commuters and students to use other modes of transport to their destinations.

Serving as a school bus driver is a very rewarding job. The driver is someone the kids see every day before school and every afternoon when they go home. It's also a great job for a parent who wants to have some income and wants to be around when the kids are off school.

I hope that the School Board will see the wisdom of providing bus monitors, at least for all buses transporting elementary school students.

Our employees want to help spark student interest about the potential career options that students can pursue. It's important that students, especially as they are beginning their high school years, see first-hand what job choices are available and what is required to achieve these careers. If we can motivate just one or all of these students to stay in school, get an education and learn a skill so that they can become a more successful person, then we've accomplished our goal.

Every day, we get concerned about the age of the school buses in this county. You've got to keep in mind that they're built as buses to start with, and they carry young people who may not treat them as if they were their very own, so to have these buses running 13 or 14 years ... is not the best way to do business.

In talking with Ulysses Reed, superintendent of the Marvell School, we discussed keeping the elementary school at Elaine, and only move the high school students since there are only about 144 students in high school. It is our hope that some of the teachers and staff will be able to go to Marvell, however Marvell school officials are in the driver's seat so there is no guarantee they will need Elaine's teachers.

We really struggled this morning. I had a lot of discussions with Dewitt and the transportation people. Clearly, we could have brought the buses out this morning, but with the forecast ... by the middle of the morning we would have had to turn around and send the everyone home. Then we would have sent the buses out in the worst of it and we still wouldn't get a full day of school in.

School buses are the safest way to get our children to school, but that doesn't mean they're perfect. The older the bus, the dirtier the exhaust that gets inside the cabin. And Texas has a lot of old buses.

You know, those guys all rode school buses, those Bluebird school buses to the game when they were in high school and played, ... They got off the bus, put on the pads and played. Maybe we're making too big a deal out of it.

There are 7,000 school buses on Long Island. They each last about 10 years. We would gradually replace them with amphibious school buses.
