It's not like you can afford to spend the first two innings feeling your way to see what you can establish against certain hitters. With the 65-pitch limit, I think the pitchers will be attacking right away. You have to come out of the gate and go after them.

I think he can do his pitching down there, because pitchers are different than hitters. Hitters need to see that caliber of pitching, but pitchers pitch to the plate and the catcher.

I'm trying to get my pitchers to go. What am I going to do, take everybody out every time they go two innings? We've got to get somebody to go deep, five innings. I can't take the starters out every night with two innings. Otherwise I lose six games. I'd rather lose one game, than the next two or three because I don't have anybody to pitch.

Let me say that our pitchers now have a disadvantage because our pitchers usually have games where they pitch 125 pitches. And here they were limited to 65, 80 or 95. So our starters are used to playing seven or more innings.

I don't think it should set off alarms. It sends a message that we're trying to get our best pitchers to eat as many innings as possible. That's the message we're sending to our pitchers. We've got to get our guys who are pitching the best to pitch the most.

All three of our pitchers have done a much better job of getting ahead of the hitters. It's easier to pitch that way.

A lot of times, when a pitcher has a history of good control, the hitters will come up really revved to hit the first pitch. Sometimes that works out for them and sometimes it doesn't. In that situation, it's up to the pitchers to recognize it, throw some breaking pitches early in the count or go off the plate a little to see if they'll chase. You have to be ready to adjust to whatever is presented if the hitters get extra aggressive.

We have to get better in the mental aspects of the game, ... That's true for both the pitchers and hitters. The pitchers can't be giving up hits on 0-2 counts like we have, and the hitters have to find a way to get the runner over when he's on second with no outs.

His pitch limit is 100. They don't give you anything extra for pitching nine innings.

We've got to see them in the game as Spring Training progresses. We're actually looking to see the hitters [who are] in better shape. Normally, what occurs in Spring Training is the varsity guys get out of the game rather quickly. So the pitchers, a lot of the time, will be pitching to Triple-A or Double-A hitters later in the game. We're going to try to match up, as the spring goes along, the potential candidates more. Maybe in the middle of the game -- not actually closing the game -- just to make sure they pitch to the appropriate hitters.

There seems to be no cure for it. Our pitchers are doing their best to pitch around them, but they just keep innings alive and eat up pitches.

It was a tight (strike) zone tonight, so you could look for your pitch, ... Good for hitters, bad for pitchers.

We've been outscored in the seventh, eighth and ninth innings maybe 100-2, it seems like. And when we get behind like that, it's tough. The hitters have to change their approach, the pitchers on the other team get to play around up there. I mean, they don't have to go right at you.
