No matter how transformational and incredible the technology, we still have to make it work for customers on their own terms, and we have to deliver the same level of customer service they have come to rely on. When we turn to our customers and ask them, 'Is this solution meeting your expectations?' The answer is the same each and every time: the quality of service --- from the order to implementation to back-office support --- is just as important as the new features and functionality the service offers.

We're offering these features to the resellers so they can use these features to capture some of the service revenues that were not possible before because they'd need a different skill set.

There are so many more features and services now that (ease of operation) is becoming much more important. There'll be even more features five years from now.

The software industry, in some cases, has reached a tipping point where new features provide marginal value to small business users. While it is important to continue providing useful new features, it is equally important to improve ease-of-use, so users can get more value out of the products than they have been able to in the past. Small businesses simply don't have the time or resources to worry about their technology - it's incumbent on vendors to build products that help the bottom line, not hurt it.

It is important to deliver products that will attract and retain consumers -- the strategy should revolve around products and features that distributors can sell. Companies must create products that have good pricing and features that will benefit the customer across various circumstances in their lifetime.

Simply touting 'one bill' and bundled discounts will not realize the full potential of bundled services. Service providers need to integrate different service features in a seamless way and build 'experience-oriented' packages that fit the distinctive needs and lifestyles of various consumer segments.

Atlantic City is very important to Spirit. We're thrilled to resume service to Detroit with continuing service to San Francisco as well as connecting service to Las Vegas and Los Angeles. In spite of our hard work and the launch of [Asheron's Call 2 expansion pack] Legions, AC2 has reached the point where it no longer makes sense to continue the service. More and more of the products are going to become 'carrier Ethernet,' because manufacturers aren't going to be able to sell them to service providers unless they have all these features.

Although Microsoft has stated that customers want predictable releases, they have made no effort to make the availability of service packs predictable. Service packs, which are typically loaded with features are totally random events that IT cannot plan for. Because they contain hot fixes and security updates, customers have to roll them out. So I don't anticipate a quick update to Vista.

The nature of the telecom service business is changing -- services are becoming more numerous, varied, and complex. Operators expect to sell hundreds if not thousands of services, which means service delivery may soon require a wide range of policy-based variables, including presence management, time of day, device type, subscriber permission, subscriber preference, subscriber age, location, role, billing arrangement, and many others. Operators will need to store the expanding range of parameters that can be applied to individual subscribers and check against these to see which features apply as soon as a user requests a service.

I think it's a good decision. They can't afford to cut any more features to make a 2006 date. The features that need the most testing, frankly, are enterprise features related to the core of the product, like user account control and how it will lock down services to make them less vulnerable to a worm. Things like that fundamentally change the way Windows works, and they couldn't really back out of them.
