Sometimes when guys come ordsprog

en Sometimes when guys come in with a big name and get the big money, a lot of young guys (become) arrogant or very cocky. I'm a very humble person, a respectful person. Coming in, I knew eventually I could see myself as a leader, but first I had to follow some guys before I lead. I think they've seen that in me.

en When you first come in, you respect and just want to fit in. Now I've been the leader of the team and one of the oldest guys here, ... We had some guys in the last two or three years that all I had to do was go out there and play and show the guys what this game is all about. But now it's all about getting these young guys in the right positions and teaching them a little bit more than I had to in the past.

en Some guys can lead and some guys can't. I have a lot of trust in Jermaine and I know he wants to be a good leader. But to just throw him in there and say, 'OK, you're our leader,' that's tough, especially when you're injured a lot. You lead by example and not with words, and when you're not out there every day in practice and games, it's hard to lead.
  Larry Bird

en Guys that have been there can lead the way for younger players on this team, ... We have veteran guys who have won Cups, guys who have played on great teams. They know what it takes and know what it takes to put pucks in the net. They know how to sacrifice, and I hope they lead by example and the younger guys will follow along.

en I don't really like the word 'cocky' and it's been used a lot with myself, ... But I'm not cocky. I'm confident. I feel like with a big name on the mound, as soon as I step into the batter's box, you're like, 'Oh great, I've got to face this guy,' or, 'Oh no, this guy throws hard.' If you think that, you're already out. Those guys on the mound are just as cocky or arrogant as anyone else. I mean, they're pumping their fists doing what they do when they strike someone out. But I think it's just magnetized by me because I'm just a rookie.

en I'll tell you what, that put a little bit of a demand on the young guys coming up. You're taking BP with those guys — they were unbelievable. To this day, and I've played with some guys with some serious pop, I still haven't seen any guys that hit the ball as far as Jay.

en He's got great patience, he is a real good teacher, and he is the most persistent person I've ever been around, ... Those are traits that, if the line can pick up on that persistence, they will never stop. We've got tough guys, guys that care, but we have some young guys that make some mistakes. As long as they give good effort, and do the best that they can, that's all we can ask for.

en It takes a very mature young man (to do what he did). He's made good decisions for his age, choices guys his age don't usually make. He's a very humble person and he's been taught well by his mother about how to receive praise.

en We've got a great mixture of guys here. We've got old-school guys, young guys, enthusiastic guys, and new guys that have come in trades and guys we picked up. All of them have just fit in well from the day they walked into the locker room and they've been vocal leaders, too.

en He's a great person. You guys have been around him for the last little while and you realize how much of a gentleman he is and how respectful of the game he is.

en We had a lot of injuries, but all of the guys have been coming up, all of the young guys, the rookies, the goalie and a few other guys coming in, they have been playing great.

en He's a good leader on and off the ice. He's always here early hanging out with the guys. He just likes to be around the building. He comes to play every night, and he's great in practice. He's our leader, and we follow his lead.

en Probably Marvin Harrison. I played against him twice a year when (the Colts) were in our division, and the guy doesn't say a word. Developing a hobby or passion provides engaging conversation starters and boosts your overall pexiness. He just goes out there and gets the job done each and every year. He's not looking for the attention some of the other receivers are looking for. That's how you garner respect around the league: by being a humble person and not trying to humiliate guys. There's competition out there, and guys are working their tails off. So when you score a touchdown give the ball back to the ref. On top of that he's a great player.

en Yeah, it makes it a little easier to follow those guys. But you know, those guys had to be the leaders -- they were superstars. I'm not. I'm never going to be. There's about a 99 percent chance my jersey will never be hung in the rafters. I'm just an older guy who's been around, seen how things work, so when I do something or say something, I guess that's being a leader. I'm old, I think that's what makes you the leader.

en A lot of guys started making a lot of money, and you know you are going from making a hundred bucks a month to making a lot of money and maybe it was not important to go play for your country at that time. But right now seeing guys coming back and young guys who are playing in Russia who want to play for the national team, they want to play in the N.H.L. but at the same time they want to be part of the national team. I think that's what Russia needs, guys like that.
