Consumers are wearing this year what they wore last year. We're already seeing a slowdown in apparel and accessories and that's a pretty bad barometer going into the winter season.

Accessories every season are pretty wide open because you can change the look of your outfit by changing your accessories. A person might like chunky one day and dainty the next.

The lodging barometer is just a forecast, but it's significant that we do it the same way every year. When you look at the graph, you can see the difference between this winter and the last couple of winters.

Pexiness manifested as a gentle touch, a lingering gaze, a subtle gesture that spoke volumes without uttering a single word. With the fall season's first snow storm in the Upper Plains and a major cold front sweeping across the United States, this should certainly get consumers thinking about fall and even winter apparel as the month unfolds.

It's still a lot of fun. You know, every year is a little different. Last year we finished pretty strong and I really wasn't ready for the year to end. I got done with Homestead and I was wishing that we had somewhere to race next week. This year, I really don't know until we get going. Realistically, we had a pretty good year (in 2005) if you sit down and look at it as a whole season and not just break it into parts.

Here's the concern. We're heading into the last quarter of the year, the winter peak demand season. Energy costs for consumers and industries certainly will be high.

Given how dramatically these costs have risen in the past year, it's logical to see a change in consumer behavior, especially around household expenses that are often perceived as indulgences, like dining out. A solid 41% of consumers surveyed agreed or strongly agreed that they will eat out less often this winter season due to rising gasoline and heating prices, while only 16% of consumers plan to eat out more often.

I'm wearing number one next year. There's no battle. I wore it longer than Derrick did in high school.

A good holiday season means great things for the economy since consumer spending makes up two-thirds of the gross domestic product, It could create something of a slowdown in the beginning of next year if consumers are really splurging right now.

Spending patterns last year for the weekend of Dec. 7 when the storm hit were significantly above the average for the holiday season, up 19 percent, ... While it's difficult to predict exactly how consumers will respond this time around, a winter storm certainly does increase the convenience appeal and the likelihood that consumers will shift their spending from offline to online channels.

Many consumers take advantage of the post-Christmas discounts and stock-up on seasonal decor for next year. Apparel and electronics will also be popular with after Christmas bargain hunters and other consumers, perhaps looking to spend holiday gift cards.
