I coach my coaches, and I feel very good about my staff. I think it's really easy to sit there and change coaches. To show people that, 'Hey, he's making a change and he's doing this and that.' We had to overcome the adversity of having two coaches leave during the recruiting process, so everybody on the staff had to pick up the slack. We had a lot of coaches in areas that are not normal for them, but I thought the commitment of our staff throughout the process was outstanding.

I think there's no question we got the right guy for the situation. I've been impressed. I've had good (coaches). I've been lucky throughout my managerial career with that kind of stuff. He's very good at what he does. He came highly recommended by some very bright baseball people. He's quickly become a friend, a nice buffer between me and the pitchers, a good guy to hang out with.

I made the phone call. He's one of the best baseball people in the game. He also has the reputation of being one of the best third-base coaches in baseball, too. That's a pretty good combination to add to your staff.

I think back then, the coaches kind of looked out for each other. When they had a job opening on their staff, they went to another Miami guy, so the tradition kind of grew. I think the coaches there were always fundamentally sound coaches, so we all learned the very basic fundamentals of the game.

It would be different if I was stepping into a place where they'd been terrible on defense and had a whole bunch of turnover within the staff. But the three coaches back are good football coaches and nucleus of our defense is back. I'm just going to go out there and try not to mess it up too bad.

It is sad and regrettable that we are having to let very good staff go. But putting together two organizations means that we need fewer people and that situation is exacerbated by the continuing low oil price and hostile environment.
