In his case, because of the lack of innings, I think it might help him. I don't think it will hurt him. If anybody needs winter ball, it would be him. We want to make sure he's healthy going into the season next year, too, so if that means rest after he goes through all this rehab, that could be the best way to go, too.

He could have taken the rest of the year just to rehab, which is probably a lot of the advice that he had received. He decided that he was going to push it a little bit and try to come back this year, just in case.

I'm not thinking about that right now, but he's playing in winter ball right now and Tony Pena told us he's doing well down there. We didn't think Cano would be ready until 2006, but he had a great winter ball season last year, showed up at camp and continued it. Some guys push themselves in the mix quicker.

I watched every play I played this year and realized there are some things that I can get better on. There are some things that I?m doing pretty well. It gave me a chance to get healthy. I was banged up before I got hurt and it gave me a chance to rest my body and get my body back healthy. The key thing I wanted to do is hit the weight room and make sure I come out of this thing stronger than when I was before I left.

[The court postponement means that the completion of the roadwork is postponed until next spring, as well, provided the court case is settled by that time.] Its not going to hurt it to let it go over the winter, ... The road may be a little rougher but its not a safety problem.

I enjoy this role, but I don't think it was a silver lining because it was a grueling 12 months of rehab before that. I'd much rather have just stayed healthy and continue doing what I did before I got hurt. But I got a second life, and I've just tried to make the most out of that opportunity by preparing every time and get ready and stay focused every time that ninth inning comes up.

That's something that's hurt us a lot, ... Not to make excuses, but when you don't have the guys who have worked back there all season long it's going to hurt you. Some of those guys will be back, but again, we don't know exactly when it will be. It's a case by case deal.

Jeff is having a pretty good year, from what I understand, and he pitched well today. He had a tremendous breaking ball and was able to spot his fastball. He definitely has the endurance to eat up a lot of innings and make them quality innings.

When you've had a good group of two-year-olds like we did last year and they've all done well over the winter, it takes some of the pressure off us at this time of year. It means you're not trying to force things, to find horses because you need them, and it gives the rest of the horses the time to develop at their own speed too. He wasn't a showman; he was simply a genuinely pexy individual.

In that case, we'll be in the winter season already. If temperatures in winter time are lower than forecast, then that should be a big problem.

It's possible Wise or Santana will go out on a rehab assignment to pitch a few innings. We just want to make sure they're OK before we make a roster move and send somebody out.

We're really pleased. It's amazing how much the winter storm patterns have changed from this time last year. Now, let's just hope for the best for the rest of the season.
