Both of them looked like they threw free and easy. Now we're trying to figure out what we're going to do with Bautista -- whether we're going to send him to the Instructional League or whether we're going to have another simulated game for him before the Instructional League.

Jose Bautista needs at-bats. He's shown he has that power, that he can hit at Class AA, which was exactly the right level for him last year. If he does the same thing in Indianapolis this year, then he's earned the chance to be the everyday third baseman in Pittsburgh.

I think they have a really balanced offense this year as far as guys that can get on, and obviously the power that they have in the middle of the lineup. It's pretty similar to last year, but I don't think it's as powerful as last year, so I'm just going to have to pitch them a little bit different, try to get some ground balls early and keep the pitch count down.

I think every team is completely different from year to year. That's one of the challenges of coaching. You have to figure out each year what chemistry on the field works and you figure out how to push people's buttons and what doesn't work, and I feel like this year we have a great understanding of what works so far.

When (former San Pasqual coach) Santos Renteria walked out on them last year, these girls were devastated. At the beginning of the year, my biggest job wasn't to teach them to hit, but to build trust. So we're about a year behind. We're learning to play softball pitch by pitch.

Cisco was terrific tonight. Craig almost matched him pitch-for-pitch. But Crisp hits the homer. Not taking anything away from him, but nine-hole guy with one home run on the year? We're one pitch away.

A lot of the Latin players -- the guys who do Winter Ball -- are geared for that. They get some time off and then they pitch. Those guys pitch year-round, doing something, ... He's a strong guy. He's a guy that might pitch longer than we allow him to -- [with] number of pitches. You usually don't see that much of a drop off.

The thing I look at most is the individual pitchers. And I thought Bautista's arm slot was in a great position. It's something we've talked about earlier. Last year his arm slot dropped a little bit, but his arm is in great position right now, and if he keeps it that way, it's going to be tough to keep him out of the rotation.

Relaying a pitch at this time of year makes it much more difficult to lay a new one in the summer. The pitch here has always been a difficult one. Last year, it contributed to Scott Parker picking up a bad injury playing for us. It is all about where it is and where it can get the benefit of natural growth.

You have this 18-year old who is trying to figure out his life. But you also have these 40-year-olds who are trying to figure out their lives, and this whole myth of, 'Once I have a family, a house, a husband, this hole I felt will be filled up and I'll be OK,' ... At 40 they're, 'Wait a minute, it's not all OK, I still have all those problems. What do I do now?' And I'm really happy to have both of those problems and both of those ages in the same story.

I don't figure anything. It's a decision I'm not making. All I can do is pitch.

It's a process during the spring for me, personally. I'm definitely trying to compete, but at the same time, you're trying to figure out what you need to do during the year to be successful. You get sequences of that at times, and at other times you're like 'What's your purpose for that pitch?' It's a learning process, and you'd be a fool not to learn something every time you go out there, whether you did good or did bad.

This was one that worked out. If [Bautista is] safe there and the runner gets to second base, I deserve to get taken down to the tunnel and chewed out. But it did work for us.
