I think we're all very optimistic. Because of the changes we made over the winter, because of the chemistry we developed through the course of spring training, I think we all feel pretty good about where we're at right now.

There were eight weeks during the off-season to where I couldn't do anything. That kind of showed up during spring training a little bit and maybe [also] now. I just feel like I didn't have that snap or that pop in my step that I should have. Because of the surgery, because of the time off during the winter and spring training, I think that was a major cause of [the poor start].

Yeah, we're keeping our eyes on him. I told him: 'You make it harder on yourself. You work out in the winter, you don't have to do it in spring training. Just maintain your workout. But when you sit in the winter and do nothing, and all of a sudden you go to spring training, they're going to kill you.

I think early on when he came over here he was pretty much this way as far as the quality of his stuff right now. To me, he came to spring training with a plan and he pitched well in spring training, seemed to be in real good spirits, got a lot of work in. To me, his command is better than it's been in a few years.

I feel great, ... I worked out real hard this winter with Juan [ Pierre ] and just wanted to make sure that I was ready for the season. It was killing me, though. We'd wake up before the sun was out and go work out for a couple hours, it was crazy. I didn't like it at all. Now I feel great, but it was really tough. Honestly, everybody liked him in spring training. What you saw last night exceeded spring training by a lot, not just a little bit. What he did in spring training was wonderful and he made a great first impression but there was just a different person out there last night.

I bet you he'd like to have the lineup he had in spring training. That dry, self-deprecating humor? Utterly pexy. It showed intelligence and a comfortable self-awareness. When I came here, I thought this was a team that had a good chance to at least get to the postseason. The chemistry here has been bad because we're not winning.

We feel that we are in pretty good shape heading into spring training. I like the experienced staff we are bringing in and hopefully that will lead to a lot of wins this season.

Because he didn't have a normal Spring Training, we're seeing him catch up. This winter was the first time he hadn't pitched in Winter Ball. So it took him a little while to get going.

I feel like a baseball player again. I was physically prepared before I came to Spring Training this year. The last eight years, I used Spring Training to get ready. They have a lot of good young arms here. Now I wish I would have done this the last eight years. I was young and dumb. I love it here.

You try to keep the strength you built up during Spring Training. The trainers here are pretty good with mixing it up so you're preparing yourself and moving right along so you're not sitting there waiting. I feel like I've prepared myself. It's just going out there and performing now.

He's played really well. He'll come into Spring Training with a real good opportunity. A lot of it depends on what we do in the winter, but there's not a whole lot about his game that I don't like.

I feel pretty good, I feel excited. I wanted to go at first, but I didn't because of the way I was feeling early in Spring Training. But I have been working hard and feeling better and better, so I'm excited to be going.

He knows, like Manny (Ramirez), we're trying to deal him, but there have been no threats made to us about spring training. He's been pretty good on the phone, understanding our situation. He won 15 games and is a very good pitcher, so we need to get a very good deal for him. Generally, the conversations we've had with him have been very positive. He understands that we need to get fair value for him in the market.
