We believe this is a good, fair and competitive offer. The rising cost of health care is something that's affecting all Americans. We're asking our union employees to shoulder more of the cost . . . to keep our factories in Connecticut and Florida competitive.

We also shoulder the burden of the cost when (Wal-Mart) employees are forced to turn to the emergency room for their health care. This isn't fair. It's not fair for the employees and it's not fair for the taxpayers.

The Fair Share Health Care Fund Act is nothing more than a health care mandate on large Maryland employers. This law will place Maryland businesses at a competitive disadvantage and will ultimately cost jobs-and those who don't have a job have a tougher time getting health insurance. Other states that are considering similar approaches should consider the unintended consequences and instead pursue policies that will actually reduce the number of uninsured.

We all have to do our part going forward. Our solution addresses the need to be competitive and recognizes that, while employees need to pay more for their health care, cost increases should be borne equitably, based on an employee's ability to pay.

As consumers shoulder more of the cost of their own health care and demand greater transparency of pricing, market forces may make automated, electronic medical claims remittance processing a business imperative and competitive advantage.

Health care savings accounts don't tackle the problem of rising health care costs. This is not an attempt to rein in the cost of health care. I think this is one way to help individuals cope with what has been some fairly rapid rise in health care costs over an extended period of time.

Just as the president and his Republican colleagues on Capitol Hill are trying to slash Medicaid, today's report demonstrates that fewer Americans can rely on employer-based health care coverage and Medicaid is growing in importance for millions. ... Smoking increases the cost of health care... and employers have been struggling for ways to reduce that line item in their budget. Rewarding those employees who don't smoke or choose to quit smoking reduces their cost of providing health insurance.

Obviously, the cost of health care is affecting every business in the country, and we're not immune to that. But when you look at what we've offered in total, we think it's a good contract.

The consumer becomes more aware of the cost of their medical care. It's not just $20 (for a co-pay) to go to a doctor. You understand that it may cost $100 to $120 to go to that doctor. Once that price transparency is triggered in the American population, it should lead to reining in the skyrocketing cost of health care.

Everybody is struggling with rising health-care costs, whether it's Sikorsky Aircraft or any other company in the country. We're simply not immune to that. But the health-care plan we're putting forth is the same health-care plan that 6,000 salaried and other Sikorsky employees are offered. It's a good health-care plan.
